Ceramic Coating Through a Vancouver Year: When and Why

Ceramic Coating Through a Vancouver Year: When and Why

Published

Vancouver's Seasons Are All Hard on Paint

A vehicle in Vancouver is exposed to a wider range of conditions in any given year than almost any other city in Canada. Winter brings road salt and calcium-chloride brine that coats the paint and begins corrosive contact within hours of drying. Spring and autumn bring heavy rain that deposits industrial fallout and road film on every horizontal surface. Summer brings the other extreme: the UV index in the Lower Mainland climbs high enough in July and August that prolonged sun exposure without protection begins to oxidise paint that is already weakened by the salt season.ceramic coating

What Ceramic Coating Does That Wax Cannot

A paint sealant or wax sits on the surface of the paint and provides a hydrophobic barrier. That barrier wears off over time — wax within weeks to months, a synthetic sealant within three to twelve months — and must be reapplied to maintain protection. A ceramic coating chemically bonds to the paint surface at a molecular level, forming a hard glass-like layer that is integral to the paint rather than sitting on top of it. Once cured, it does not wear off in the same way. The hydrophobic surface it creates makes the vehicle easier to clean, because road film and contamination do not bond to the surface as easily. In Vancouver's rain season, that hydrophobic effect is immediately useful: the vehicle stays cleaner between washes, and the rain that hits the paint sheets off rather than sitting on the surface and leaving water marks.

Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Apply Ceramic Coating

The autumn months of September and October are the ideal window for ceramic coating in Vancouver. The summer UV season has ended, so the paint surface is not compromised by sun oxidation. The winter salt season has not yet begun, so the surface is at its cleanest after a summer of regular washing. A coating applied in September has four to six weeks to cure in dry conditions before the first salt hit, which means the coating is performing at its full hydrophobic specification from the start of the winter season rather than building up protection through the winter months.paint protection film

The other practical argument for autumn coating is the lead time. Most quality ceramic coating applicators in Vancouver are booked four to eight weeks out during the pre-winter surge. Booking in September means the coating is applied before the worst of the road debris season, rather than competing for an appointment in November when every vehicle in the city is trying to get the same work done before winter.

When PPF Is the Better Choice

Ceramic coating protects the paint surface it covers. It does not protect against stone chips, physical impact, or the abrasion that comes from driving on roads that have accumulated gravel and road salt. A vehicle that is driven primarily on motorways — Highway 1 through the North Shore, the Upper Levels, the Port Mann Bridge approach — accumulates stone chips on the leading edges of the hood and front bumper at a rate that coating alone cannot prevent. For those vehicles, a combination of PPF on the high-impact front surfaces and ceramic coating on the remaining body panels provides the most complete protection available.

What to Expect from a Ceramic Coating Appointment

A full ceramic coating application on a vehicle takes between one and three days, depending on the vehicle size and the condition of the paint surface. The paint must be decontaminated and, if necessary, corrected before coating, because the coating will lock the current condition of the paint in place. A surface that has swirl marks or oxidation when the coating is applied will show those marks through the coating for as long as the coating lasts.

JRS Auto Customs offers ceramic coating for vehicles in Vancouver. We can advise on whether coating, PPF, or a combination is the most appropriate protection for your vehicle and your driving conditions.
