Ceramic Coating Through a Vancouver Winter
Published
A ceramic coating is one of the more maintenance-light ways to protect your car's paint. But maintenance-light does not mean maintenance-free, and in Vancouver's winter climate the difference between a coating that is looked after and one that is neglected becomes visible by spring. Here is what to expect through a Vancouver winter and what to do before and after the season.
What Winter Does to a Ceramic Coating
A ceramic coating's hydrophobic surface is its primary defence mechanism. Water beads and rolls off, taking contaminants with it. In Vancouver's winter rain, this means the coating is doing its job every time it rains: the water beads, the salt and grime in the rain does not bond to the surface, and the next rinse — whether from rain or a wash — carries the contamination away.
The hydrophobic effect can diminish over a winter season on a vehicle that is parked outdoors. UV exposure from the less-frequent but still present winter sun, combined with the accumulation of road film and contamination, can reduce the beading behaviour. This is not damage to the coating — it is surface contamination on top of the coating that reduces its performance. It is recoverable.
Freeze-thaw cycles can also affect the coating's edges and any exposed seams. If water has worked under a contaminated edge of the coating — where washing did not reach — a freeze-thaw cycle can cause that edge to lift. This is rare on a well-maintained coating, but it is worth checking the edges of coated panels in spring.
Before Winter: What to Do
Before winter, inspect the coating for any areas where the hydrophobic behaviour has already diminished — indicated by water that sheets rather than beads, or areas that appear duller than the rest of the panel. These areas have surface contamination that has bonded to the coating and can be addressed with a decontamination wash before winter sets in.
A decontamination wash uses an iron remover or a dedicated coating-safe decontamination product to dissolve bonded contamination on the coating surface. This restores the hydrophobic behaviour without damaging the coating. Doing this before winter — rather than waiting until spring — means the coating enters the winter season in peak condition.
Check the coating's condition at the painted panels most exposed to road spray: the front bumper, hood leading edge, and front fenders. These are the areas where road film accumulates fastest and where contamination is most likely to affect coating performance through the winter.
Through the Winter: Maintenance
Through the winter, continue washing the coated vehicle with a pH-neutral automotive shampoo. Do not use a wash-and-wax product on a ceramic coating — the wax will mask the coating's performance and make it difficult to assess whether the hydrophobic effect is working. Plain pH-neutral shampoo only.
If the vehicle is coated and driven through salted roads, rinse the coating surface with clean water after driving on heavily salted roads. This removes road salt before it can dry and bond to the surface. It takes two minutes at a coin-operated wash bay and is the single most effective maintenance step for a coating through winter.
Avoid pressure washing the film edges directly at close range. Pressure washers can lift edges if directed at film edges or at any coating seams. Keep the wand at a distance and at an angle that does not direct water under coating edges.
After Winter: What to Check and Do
After a Vancouver winter, inspect the coating's hydrophobic behaviour at the front panels — bumper, hood, front fenders. Run a water-beading test: pour a cup of water over a panel and observe whether it beads sharply or sheets. If it sheets, the surface has contamination that needs a decontamination wash.
A spring decontamination wash is the most common maintenance service for ceramic-coated vehicles that have been driven through winter. It restores the coating to full hydrophobic performance and prepares it for the summer season. After a thorough decontamination wash, most coatings benefit from a hydrophobic boost product formulated for ceramic coatings — applied after the decontamination wash, it restores the beading effect and adds a fresh layer of surface protection.
If the coating shows areas of failure — where water no longer beads even after decontamination — a professional assessment can determine whether the coating has been compromised or whether the surface needs a different maintenance approach. Coating failure from contamination is recoverable; failure from physical damage is not.
Wheel and Glass Coating
If your wheels and glass were coated at the same time as the body, they benefit from the same seasonal maintenance approach: iron-remover decontamination before winter and a hydrophobic boost in spring. Glass ceramic coating — applied to the windscreen — significantly improves wet-weather visibility by causing rain to bead and sheet at motorway speeds.
Wheel barrel coating — where the inside of the wheel rim is coated alongside the face — reduces brake dust accumulation and makes wheel cleaning significantly easier. It requires the same decontamination approach through winter to maintain its performance.
Book a spring coating maintenance appointment at JRS Auto Customs to have the coating assessed, decontaminated, and boosted before the summer driving season.
