Why Colour Change Wraps Degrade in Vancouver's Climate
A vinyl wrap on a vehicle in Vancouver faces a combination of stressors that are specific to the Lower Mainland. Road salt and calcium-chloride brine in winter coat the vehicle and begin degrading the adhesive edge of the wrap within days of a salt application. UV exposure in summer — concentrated in July and August — causes the vinyl to fade unevenly, particularly on south-facing panels. And the frequent rain cycle means the vehicle is regularly wet, which accelerates the edge lifting that begins at stone-chip impact sites and panel seams.colour change wraps
The Washing Rules for a Wrapped Vehicle
The most important rule for maintaining a wrapped vehicle is the same as maintaining unwrapped paint: a two-bucket wash method, with a separate rinse bucket for the wash mitt, prevents transferring contamination from the rinse water back onto the vehicle surface. The contamination that causes the most damage to wraps is the same contamination that damages paint: industrial fallout and road salt. A touchless automatic wash is acceptable between hand washes, but it does not replace one.
The second rule is drying. Water that is allowed to air-dry on a vinyl wrap leaves water marks — mineral deposits from the water itself — that are more visible on vinyl than on paint. Drying the vehicle with a clean microfibre drying towel after every wash prevents these marks from forming. In Vancouver's mineral-heavy tap water, this matters more than in cities with softer water.maintenance detailing
Edge Care: The Most Neglected Part of Wrap Maintenance
The edges of a wrap — the points where it terminates at panel lines, door shuts, and trim edges — are the most vulnerable part of the installation. The adhesive bond at a wrap edge is not as strong as the bond in the field of the panel, and road debris and pressure washing can lift an edge over time. Once an edge has lifted, water and contamination get underneath the wrap, and the lift propagates.
The fix for a lifted edge is re-application, ideally within days of it being noticed. A lifted edge that is left over a winter season will accumulate contamination underneath the wrap that prevents re-adhesion and may require a panel re-wrap. Inspecting the edges after every wash and pressing any lifting edges back down with a soft heat gun or plastic smoother is a five-minute task that prevents a much more expensive repair.
Wax, Sealant, and Ceramic Coating on Wraps
One of the most effective maintenance investments for a colour change wrap is a surface sealant applied to the vinyl. Vinyl-safe sealants are available in both spray-on and wipe-on formats, and they add a hydrophobic layer that makes the wrap easier to clean and provides a mild UV-protective barrier that slows fading. A vinyl-safe ceramic coating applied over a wrap provides the same hydrophobic benefit as it does on paint, with the additional advantage of making contamination less likely to bond to the surface in the first place.ceramic coating
When a Wrap Needs Professional Attention
A wrap that has developed extensive edge lifting, significant fading, or contamination that cannot be removed by washing is a candidate for professional restoration. Surface contamination that has bonded to the vinyl can sometimes be removed by a professional detailer using vinyl-safe decontamination products. Fading caused by UV exposure is irreversible on the existing wrap — the only remedy is replacement — which is why maintaining the UV barrier with sealants or ceramic coating from the start is considerably cheaper than re-wrapping.
JRS Auto Customs advises on colour change wrap maintenance and can apply vinyl-safe surface protection to extend the life of your wrap. We can also assess whether an existing wrap is a candidate for restoration or requires replacement.
