Exterior Trim and Door Seals: Winter Care for Vancouver

Exterior Trim and Door Seals: Winter Care for Vancouver

Published

Exterior trim -- the rubber seals around doors and boots, the black plastic mouldings along the lower body, the rubber window guides -- takes a disproportionate amount of abuse from Vancouver's climate for something that gets almost no maintenance attention. While paint and glass get cleaned and protected, the seals and trim are expected to perform through years of freeze-thaw cycles, salt spray, and UV exposure with no routine care at all. That is a gap worth addressing.

What Vancouver winter does to door seals

The rubber seals around car doors, boots, and sunroofs are made from EPDM rubber -- a material chosen for its temperature stability and resistance to ozone. But EPDM degrades. Road salt, ozone in the air, UV exposure, and repeated compression from closing doors all accelerate the breakdown of the rubber compound. In Vancouver, the combination of salt and freeze-thaw is the most damaging: salt solution draws moisture into the rubber and accelerates cracking, while the freeze-thaw cycle stresses the molecular bonds in the rubber compound each night.

The first sign of seal degradation is usually a change in the way the door closes -- slightly less resistance from the seal, a less pronounced compression sound. By the time most owners notice, the seal has already begun to harden and crack. Once the surface of the seal has hardened, applying rubber conditioner becomes less effective because the compound can no longer absorb it.

When seals need conditioning and when they need replacing

Rubber seal conditioner -- applied to a clean seal with a foam applicator pad -- restores some suppleness to the rubber compound and repels moisture. It is most effective as prevention: applying conditioner twice a year, before winter and before summer, maintains the rubber in better condition than waiting for degradation to show. If the seal has already cracked or the rubber has a waxy or powdery surface (known as "blooming"), conditioner will not reverse the damage -- replacement is the appropriate response.

Replacing door seals is a labour-intensive repair on most vehicles. The seal must be clipped or glued into the door aperture channel, and the process requires patience to achieve a consistent compression around the full perimeter of the door. A properly fitted new seal restores the weather seal, reduces wind noise, and makes a noticeable difference to cabin insulation on cold mornings.

Black plastic trim and how it fades

Lower-body black plastic mouldings, mirror caps, and roof rails are made from polypropylene or ABS plastic, which fade and chalk when exposed to UV. In Vancouver, this process is accelerated by salt and the coastal humidity. Faded trim is not a safety issue, but it makes an otherwise well-maintained car look older than it is. Restoration products for plastic trim work by re-surfacing the faded layer -- they do not penetrate deep into the plastic -- which means the result lasts months rather than years, particularly on surfaces that receive direct sunlight.

For a more durable result, a ceramic coating applied to clean, decontaminated trim surfaces adds UV protection that significantly slows the re-fading rate. This is an often-overlooked application of ceramic coating technology: the same hydrophobic and UV-blocking properties that protect paint also work on hard plastic trim.

Interior rubber seals and fog-resistant doors

One of the most practical benefits of maintaining door seals is reduced interior fogging in cold weather. A well-sealed door resists moisture entry at the seal perimeter, which means less humidity getting into the cabin and therefore less condensation on the inside of the windscreen on cold mornings. In Vancouver's damp climate, this is a quality-of-life issue as much as a maintenance one. Maintaining the door seals is one of the simpler ways to reduce the windscreen fogging that every Vancouver driver deals with every autumn and winter morning.
