Why Your Headlights Matter More Than You Think

Why Your Headlights Matter More Than You Think

Published

Headlights are easy to take for granted until they are not bright enough. For Vancouver drivers, the combination of dark winters, frequent rain, and fog creates conditions where good headlights matter more than in sunnier cities. If your car is more than five years old and still has its original halogen headlights, the lenses have almost certainly oxidised and the bulbs have dimmed. Here is what to look for and what your options are.

Why Vancouver's Conditions Are Hard on Headlights

Most modern headlights use polycarbonate lenses. Polycarbonate is durable and impact-resistant, but it oxidises when exposed to UV light and road film. Over years, the outer surface of the lens develops a hazy, yellowish layer that scatters light instead of directing it cleanly onto the road. The result is headlights that appear dimmer than they should be — not because the bulb has failed, but because the lens is no longer transmitting light efficiently.

Vancouver's latitude means the sun sits lower in the sky for more of the year than in cities further south, which increases UV exposure on horizontal surfaces including headlights. Coastal moisture accelerates surface oxidation on top of the UV damage. For a car parked outside year-round, this process is continuous.

How Oxidation Affects Your Actual Visibility

The difference between a clear and an oxidised headlight lens is significant in practical terms. Laboratory measurements on degraded lenses show light output reductions of 30 to 50 percent compared to new. That is the difference between seeing a pedestrian at 80 metres and seeing them at 40. It is the difference between noticing a deer on the side of the road and noticing it when it is in your lane.

In Vancouver's fog — which can come in quickly on the North Shore, along the Fraser Valley, or on the bridges and overpasses that carry so much of the daily commute — every photon of light your headlights produce matters. Reduced output from oxidised lenses is not just a matter of aesthetics.

Restoration vs Replacement: What Makes Sense

If the lenses are physically intact — no cracks, no crazing, no deep scratches — restoration is a cost-effective option. Professional headlight restoration involves wet sanding the oxidised layer off the outer surface, polishing to clarity, and applying a UV protective coating to slow re-oxidation. A properly restored lens can approach new clarity at a fraction of the replacement cost.

If the lenses are cracked, deeply crazed, or the internal reflector is damaged or corroded, replacement is the better option. Some older vehicles have lenses that are no longer available from the manufacturer. OE replacement headlights are the most straightforward option for most vehicles.

LED Upgrades: What to Know

Upgrading from halogen to LED or HID is a common path, but not all bulb replacements are road-legal in BC. Bulbs not approved for the specific headlight housing can scatter light dangerously — bright for oncoming drivers but not actually illuminating the road better. The correct approach is either a complete headlight unit replacement designed for LED, or a DOT or E-marked bulb approved for the specific housing type. A reputable shop will know what is compliant for your vehicle.

For most Vancouver drivers, a quality restoration of the existing headlights is the most practical starting point: it costs less, it is road-legal by default, and it restores the original light output the headlight was designed for. If the existing headlights still do not meet your needs after restoration, a full LED-compatible replacement unit is the upgrade worth making.

JRS Auto Customs in Vancouver offers headlight restoration and can advise on replacement options for your specific vehicle. If your headlights look dimmer than they should, get in touch to discuss what makes sense for your car. See maintenance and restoration services at JRS Auto Customs.
