Paint Correction vs Detail: What Does Your Car Need?

Paint Correction vs Detail: What Does Your Car Need?

Published

What a Full Detail Actually Does

A full exterior detail is a deep cleaning of the vehicle's exterior surfaces. It uses a combination of decontamination, clay bar treatment, and machine polishing to remove embedded contamination from the paint surface and restore gloss. It removes surface contaminants — road film, industrial fallout, tree sap, bug residue — that washing alone cannot remove. The result is a clean, glossy surface, but it does not remove swirl marks, light scratches, or oxidation that has changed the paint's surface condition. A detail is maintenance; it restores cleanliness, not condition.maintenance detailing

What Paint Correction Actually Does

Paint correction removes a measurable layer of the clear coat to eliminate surface defects: swirl marks from washing, light scratches from automatic car washes or abrasive drying towels, oxidation from UV exposure, and etching from acid contaminants. It uses progressively finer compounds and polishing pads to level the clear coat surface, removing a fraction of a micron at each stage. The result is not just clean — it is optically clear. Correction restores condition, not just cleanliness.ceramic coating

The Key Difference: What Each One Cannot Do

A detail cannot correct scratches. No amount of decontamination or polishing compound will remove a scratch that has penetrated the clear coat. Applying a sealant or ceramic coating over scratched paint locks the scratches in permanently — they become visible through the coating for as long as the coating lasts. This is why correction is done before coating, not instead of coating.

When a Detail Is the Right Choice

A detail is the right choice when the vehicle's paint is in good condition but has accumulated surface contamination — a car that has been driven through a season of Vancouver winter and has road film, salt deposits, and industrial fallout on the paint but no scratches or oxidation. A detail restores the clean surface and prepares the paint for a fresh layer of protection. It is also the appropriate choice for a vehicle that is being prepared for a coating or PPF installation, to ensure the surface is clean before the film or coating is applied.

When Correction Is the Right Choice

Correction is the right choice when the vehicle has visible swirl marks, scratches, water spots, or oxidation. It is also the right choice before applying any surface protection — PPF or ceramic coating — because the protection will perform better and last longer on a corrected surface, and because applying protection over a scratched surface locks the scratches in. A vehicle that has been through multiple Vancouver winters without correction is typically a correction candidate.

What Vancouver's Climate Does to Paint Between Services

Vancouver's climate is hard on unprotected paint between services. Road salt brine that has dried on the paint surface has already begun corrosive contact with the clear coat by the time most car owners notice the vehicle looks dirty. The months between professional services — whether detail or correction — are when the most irreversible damage accumulates. The more protected the paint surface is between services, the less correction is needed when the next service arrives.

The Inspection Before Either Service

Both detail and correction require an inspection before work begins. A professional will assess the paint condition with a torch and a paint thickness gauge to determine what level of service is appropriate. A vehicle that is assessed as a correction candidate cannot be corrected effectively by a detail — and a vehicle that is assessed as a detail candidate will not benefit from the additional cost of correction if the paint surface is already in good condition. The assessment is included with any professional service quote from JRS Auto Customs.
