What Your Car Needs Between Detailing Visits in Vancouver
Published
Between professional detailing visits, the car still gets used every day. And in Vancouver, every day of use in the wet season deposits something on the paint that, if left, starts causing damage within hours. The maintenance that happens between detailer visits is not complicated — but it is specific, and doing the right things at the right time makes a measurable difference to how the car looks and how long the protection on it lasts.
The Wet Season: What Every Drive Leaves Behind
From October through to April in Vancouver, every drive leaves a layer of road film on the paint. That film is a mix of water, fine road dust, brake dust, and whatever the tyres are picking up from the road surface. It does not look like much when the car is wet. When it dries, it becomes a thin grey haze that accumulates over multiple drives. Road film is mildly acidic and begins etching into any existing wax or sealant layer within a few days of the car getting wet. The car does not look dirty enough to wash — but it is worth washing.
Bird droppings and tree sap are the most immediately damaging contaminants in this period. Both are acidic. Bird droppings can begin etching into the clear coat within two to four hours in mild weather. Tree sap works more slowly but bonds more tenaciously. Neither is removed by a standard wash — they require a dedicated remover or gentle claying to get the surface clean again. The practical rule is: if you can see it from two metres, deal with it before the next drive.
Between Washes: The Weekly Inspection
A five-minute inspection once a week catches things that become expensive if missed. Check tyre pressure — it drops roughly 1 psi per month in cold weather and temperature swings cause slow leaks to become apparent. Check the brake discs for surface rust after a wet drive — this is normal on cross-drilled or slotted rotors and wears off within a few braking cycles. Check the windscreen for chips and cracks that spread in cold weather. Check the windscreen washer fluid level and top up with a concentrate that prevents freezing.
In the interior, a quick vacuum of the floor mats and the accumulation of items in the door pockets keeps moisture from getting trapped under things that sit in the car长期. Moisture under floor mats, phone chargers left in the cabin, or water bottles that have been there since summer creates the conditions for mould and interior odour. Removing these weekly is a faster fix than dealing with a musty smell later.
The Monthly Task: Wheels, Glass, and Trim
Wheels deserve a dedicated monthly clean, not just whatever the drive-through car wash does to them. Brake dust on alloy wheels is iron-based and bonds chemically to the wheel surface — a dedicated iron remover applied monthly dissolves it before it etches into the wheel finish. After cleaning, a wheel sealant or ceramic coating on the wheel faces extends the clean appearance and makes the next wash easier. This takes about 20 minutes and makes the wheels look significantly better between professional details.
Glass is the part of the car that most people neglect between detailer visits. A quick wipe of the windscreen and side windows with a dedicated glass cleaner removes the film that builds up from wiper wear, traffic film, and road spray. Clean glass is measurably safer in wet night driving — smearing from dirty glass scatters headlights from oncoming traffic.
Before Your Next Detail: What the Detailer Needs to Know
If you have a professional detail booked, the most useful thing you can do in the week before is avoid washing the car. A dirty car gives the detailer a clear picture of what they are working with. A freshly washed car hides the contamination that the detailer needs to address. If there is a specific issue — a stone chip that needs attention, a stain on the interior, a scratch from a car door — point it out before the work starts. The detailer cannot fix what they have not been told about.
