Car Security Systems: What Vancouver Drivers Need to Know

Published

BC has seen a sustained increase in vehicle theft over the past several years, with the Vancouver and Lower Mainland area accounting for a significant share of provincial totals. Most of the cars targeted are not exotic — they are popular daily drivers, trucks, and SUVs with high demand in export markets. If you own a model that is commonly stolen, the question is not whether to add security, but which layer of security makes sense for how and where you use the car.

What your car already has

Most modern vehicles come from the factory with a immobiliser — an electronic system that prevents the engine from starting unless the correctly coded key or fob is present. The immobiliser communicates with the engine control unit and cuts the fuel pump, starter motor, or ignition circuit when it does not detect a valid signal. This was mandatory on all new vehicles sold in Canada from 2007 onward, and it eliminated a large proportion of opportunistic theft that relied on hot-wiring.

Factory alarm systems — where fitted — typically monitor door locks, the bonnet, and the boot. They trigger the horn and headlights when a sensor is activated. The quality of factory systems varies significantly by manufacturer. If your car was entry-level trim, the alarm may be less comprehensive than the same model in a higher specification.

Where factory systems leave gaps

Factory immobilisers prevent the car from starting but they do not prevent the car from being loaded onto a flatbed and transported. Relay attack — where thieves amplify the signal from a key fob inside the house to start the car parked outside — defeats the immobiliser without triggering any alarm. This method requires the key fob to be relatively close to the car, and the car needs to have push-button start.

A deadbolt on the steering column, or even just a steering lock, raises the time and tools required to drive the car away. While no system is impenetrable, the objective is to make your car sufficiently harder to steal than the next car on the street.

Upgrades that make a practical difference

GPS tracking devices allow a vehicle to be located in real time after a theft. Some are hardwired into the vehicle electrical system; others are self-contained battery units placed in an invisible location. Tracking does not prevent theft but significantly improves the probability of recovery. Some insurance providers offer a premium reduction for vehicles fitted with an approved tracking system.

Aftermarket alarm systems with tilt sensors detect when the car is raised — either by a jack or when being loaded onto a trailer. A siren with a backup battery continues to sound even if the vehicle battery is disconnected. Interior sensors detect movement inside the cabin. Many aftermarket alarms integrate with the factory keyless entry fob, so the existing remote still works.

Steering column locks and pedal locks are mechanical secondary locks that require a key to remove. They are visible from outside the car and act as a visual deterrent. They also add significant time to the process of getting the car moving. A quality brand matters — the lock barrel needs to resist drilling.

OBD port locks prevent a thief from accessing the diagnostic port to programme a replacement key. Some systems go further and include OBD protection as part of a broader immobiliser cut — the port only unlocks when the correct fob is present inside the vehicle.

Getting a system installed properly

An aftermarket security system only works as well as its installation. Wiring that is not properly routed and protected can be cut in seconds. The installer needs to understand the specific vehicle's CAN bus system, how the factory alarm integrates (or does not integrate) with the rest of the vehicle electronics, and where to hide the system control module so it is not the first thing found.

JRS Auto Customs installs aftermarket alarm and security systems as part of its performance and upgrade work. A security system can be installed alongside other modifications, or on its own.
