How Often Should You Wash Your Car in Vancouver
Published
There is no single correct answer. The right washing frequency depends on where you park, what protection your car has, and what season it is. Here is a practical framework for Vancouver drivers that covers the full year.
The Case for Washing More Often in Vancouver
Vancouver gets rain on roughly 150 days a year. Many drivers assume that rain washes the car — it does not. Rainwater is acidic, absorbs airborne pollutants as it falls, and deposits them on your car's surface. When it evaporates, it leaves behind the same mineral residue that causes water spots on unprotected paint. The car is cleaner before it rained than after, if it has not been washed recently.
Bird droppings and tree sap are active year-round in Vancouver because temperatures rarely drop far enough to neutralise the biological activity that produces them. Both are acidic and begin etching clear coat within hours of landing on the paint. If your car parks outside near trees, this is not theoretical — it is happening every day.
A Seasonal Washing Schedule for Vancouver
November through February is the highest-risk period for Vancouver paint. Road salt, sand, and gravel are on the roads throughout the Lower Mainland. Salt accelerates corrosion on any exposed metal; sand and grit abrade the clear coat. At this time of year, wash every two weeks if the car is parked outside, or at least monthly if garaged. Always wash the undercarriage and wheel arches — salt sits there longest.
March through May is wash season. Winter contamination needs to come off before the sun and warmer temperatures set in and bake it into the paint. A full wash and decontamination in early spring resets the surface. After that, every two to three weeks is sufficient for a car parked outside.
June through August, wash frequency can ease to every three to four weeks if the car is garaged. Summer in Vancouver is relatively mild and the roads are clean. The main concern is UV exposure — parking in shade where possible and maintaining any wax or ceramic coating you have applied.
September through October is when autumn debris — leaves, sap season in full swing, early road salt in higher elevations — builds up again. This is the second-best time for a full wash and inspection before winter. Wash every two weeks through this period.
If You Have Ceramic Coating or PPF
Ceramic coating reduces the urgency of washing — the hydrophobic surface sheds water and contamination more easily, and water spots are less likely to bond. But it does not eliminate washing. Contaminants that sit on the coated surface for extended periods can still degrade the coating's performance over time. A regular wash every few weeks keeps the coating functioning at its best.
PPF handles road debris and stone chips, but it still benefits from washing. Brake dust, industrial fallout, and biological contaminants settle on the film's surface and, if left, can stain or discolour it over time. PPF should be washed with the same frequency as the rest of the car.
The Right Wash Method
Frequency matters less than technique. A car washed every two weeks with the two-bucket method and pH-neutral shampoo is in better shape than a car washed weekly with a single bucket and a dirty sponge. Use a quality microfibre wash mitt. Rinse the car thoroughly before washing to remove loose debris. Work top to bottom. Do not let the car air-dry — use a clean microfibre drying towel.
Automated car washes — particularly brush tunnels — are hard on clear coat, introduce new swirl marks, and can degrade ceramic coatings and waxes. Touchless car washes are gentler but still use chemicals that are harsher than a proper hand wash. Hand washing is always the best approach for a car you care about.
Book a Professional Detail to Reset the Surface
Even with the best home washing habits, Vancouver's climate will take a toll on your car's paint over a year. A professional detail — decontamination, paint assessment, and protection — once a year resets the surface to its best condition. JRS Auto Customs in North Vancouver can advise on what level of wash and protection is appropriate for your vehicle.
