Ceramic Coating Care Through a Vancouver Year

Ceramic Coating Care Through a Vancouver Year

Published

If your car has a ceramic coating, you already know the basics: water beads off, the car stays cleaner longer, and washing takes less effort. But seasonal maintenance for a ceramic-coated car in Vancouver is more specific than most owners realise. Here is what actually changes through the year and how to get the most out of your coating.

What Winter Does to a Ceramic Coating

Road salt and brine are the biggest seasonal threat to a ceramic coating. Salt sits on the paint surface between washes and, over time, can degrade the coating's hydrophobic layer even though the underlying coating itself remains intact. The first sign of this is usually that water stops beading as aggressively as it used to -- the coating is still there, but the surface chemistry has shifted. You will also notice that the coating no longer self-cleans as effectively in light rain.

This is different from PPF in an important way: ceramic coating sits on top of the paint and takes the chemical hit, not the paint itself. A degraded coating still protects the paint underneath -- it is just not performing at its peak.

Washing Through a Vancouver Winter

The biggest mistake ceramic-coated car owners make in winter is not washing often enough because it is cold and wet. Salt accumulation on an unwashed ceramic coating is worse than the effort of a regular wash. Aim to wash every one to two weeks through the salt season using a pH-neutral shampoo formulated for ceramic coatings -- not a wax-based wash, which can leave residues that reduce hydrophobic performance.

Touchless car washes are safe for the coating but do a poor job of removing the sticky salt residue that accumulates on the lower panels and wheel arches. A two-bucket hand wash with a soft mitt is the most effective approach for a coated car in this climate.

Recharging the Hydrophobic Layer

Most professional ceramic coatings include a top-layer silica or Si02 component that provides the visible beading effect. This layer degrades faster than the underlying coating and can be refreshed without re-coating the entire car. A silica-based top-up product applied every few months restores beading and extends the coating's effective lifespan. This is especially useful after winter, when the salt season has depleted the surface layer.

JRS Auto Customs can assess your ceramic coating after winter and apply a top-up treatment if the hydrophobic performance has dropped off.

Spring Decontamination

Once the worst of the salt season passes, schedule a full decontamination wash. Iron remover applied to the paint surface dissolves bonded ferrous particles from brake dust and road debris that a regular wash cannot shift. After decontamination, reapply the hydrophobic top-up to restore peak beading before summer. This annual cycle keeps the coating performing well through its intended lifespan.

What to Avoid on a Ceramic Coating

Wax-based wash products and spray waxes leave carnauba or polymer residues on the coating surface that compete with the ceramic layer's chemistry and reduce hydrophobic performance. Avoid automatic car washes with soft brushes -- the brushes can introduce new scratches that sit on top of the coating and are more visible than on uncoated paint. A clay bar used without lubricant will also mar the coating surface.

Is a Ceramic Coating Enough on Its Own

Ceramic coating provides excellent chemical resistance and hydrophobic performance, but it has a hardness limit. Stone chips still penetrate it and reach the paint. For owners who want the highest level of protection, combining ceramic coating with paint protection film on the front-facing panels -- the bonnet, front bumper, and mirror caps -- gives you both the chemical resistance of ceramic and the impact absorption of PPF.

JRS Auto Customs offers both ceramic coating and PPF installation, and can advise on whether a combined approach makes sense for your vehicle and driving patterns. Book a consultation to discuss the options.
