Why Colour Change Wraps Fade in Vancouver's Climate

Published

Vinyl wraps do not last forever. Even the best quality colour change film fades over time, and the rate at which it fades depends on the colour, the film quality, the installation, and the climate. Vancouver's combination of high summer UV index and long wet winters creates conditions that affect wrap longevity in specific ways. Here is what Vancouver owners should understand about colour fade in wraps.

Why Wraps Fade

UV radiation is the primary driver of colour fade in vinyl wraps. Ultraviolet light breaks down the colour pigments in the film, causing them to oxidise and shift. The process is gradual -- it does not show up as a sudden change -- and it is most visible on horizontal surfaces like the bonnet, roof, and boot lid, which receive the most direct sunlight. In Vancouver, where summer UV index can reach levels comparable to California on clear days, this is a real concern even for vehicles parked in shade.

Heat accelerates UV damage. Dark-coloured wraps absorb more heat, which speeds the degradation process. This is why dark wraps -- black, dark grey, dark blue -- tend to fade faster than lighter colours in the same climate. Metallic and pearl finishes contain metal flake pigments that can oxidise differently from standard colour pigments, leading to a shift in appearance even when the base colour is stable.

Which Colours Fade Fastest

Red and orange pigments are among the least UV-stable in vinyl film chemistry. Wraps in these colours typically fade noticeably within three to four years of Vancouver sun exposure, even from a quality manufacturer. Blue and purple wraps fade more slowly but can shift toward a greenish or greyish tone over time. White and silver are the most UV-stable colours, and maintain their appearance longest. Matte finishes do not necessarily fade faster, but fading on a matte surface is more visually apparent than on a gloss finish because there is no specular reflection to mask the shift.

How to Assess Fade in Your Wrap

The best way to check for colour fade is to compare the roof and bonnet -- which receive the most UV -- with a panel that is more sheltered, such as the door sill or the area behind a spoiler. If there is a visible difference in colour depth between the two, fade is occurring. On multi-piece wraps, check each panel separately: the rear panels of a car are often in the shadow of the vehicle ahead and fade more slowly than the front.

Oxidised film also loses its surface sheen and can feel slightly chalky to the touch. This is different from surface contamination and cannot be washed away.

Maintaining Colour Vibrancy

Regular washing removes surface contaminants that can accelerate UV degradation by creating localised hot spots on the film. Use a wrap-safe wash product, not a generic car shampoo. Avoid abrasive polishes or compound on vinyl film -- unlike paint, you cannot compound a wrap without removing colour. Wax and sealant products formulated for vinyl wraps can add a layer of UV protection and extend the vibrancy of the film.

Parking in shade when possible slows fade meaningfully over time. For vehicles with wraps that are parked outdoors full-time, the fade timeline is significantly shorter than for a garage-kept car.

When to Re-Wrap

Colour fade is not reversible. Once the pigments in the film have oxidised, no treatment restores the original colour depth. The only fix is re-wrapping the affected panels. If fade is concentrated on the roof and bonnet only, those panels can be re-wrapped without re-wrapping the whole car, which reduces cost while restoring a uniform appearance.

TPU films offer better UV resistance than PVC, which is one of the practical advantages of upgrading to a TPU colour change wrap if colour longevity is a priority. JRS Auto Customs can advise on the expected lifespan of different film options for the specific colour you are considering.
