What Is a Colour Change Wrap? A Vancouver Driver's Guide

Published

The first time you see a car on the street in a colour you have never seen on that model, you are probably looking at a colour change wrap. It is one of the fastest-growing forms of car customisation in Vancouver, and yet the fundamentals are still widely misunderstood. This guide is for the driver who has heard the term, seen the results, and wants to understand what it actually involves before making a decision.

What a Colour Change Wrap Actually Is

A colour change wrap is a vinyl film — or, on higher-quality installations, a TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) film — applied over the existing factory paint. The film itself carries the colour and finish: gloss, satin, matte, metallic, colour-flip, or textured. The car underneath is not repainted. The factory paint remains intact beneath the film. At the end of the wrap's service life, the film is removed and the original paint is exposed, unchanged. This is the key distinction from a respray and it has practical implications for anyone who leases a vehicle, plans to sell the car, or wants to experiment with a look without permanence.

Vinyl vs. TPU: Why the Difference Matters

Standard colour change wraps use PVC vinyl film. It is affordable, comes in an enormous range of colours and finishes, and is well-suited to most full-vehicle colour changes. The trade-off is longevity: vinyl is susceptible to UV degradation, and in a sunny climate or on a car that spends a lot of time outdoors, the film can begin to lift at the edges and fade within three to five years.

TPU colour change film — sometimes marketed as a coloured PPF — is a newer product category. TPU is the same base material used in premium paint protection films, which means it inherits some of PPF's durability characteristics: better UV resistance, better edge adhesion, and more resilience to minor abrasion. It is priced accordingly. For Vancouver drivers, where the car may be parked outdoors in coastal humidity and occasional salt exposure, TPU's durability advantage is meaningful.

What Vancouver's Climate Does to a Wrap

Vancouver's coastal climate presents specific challenges for colour change wraps. Coastal humidity accelerates edge lifting if the film is not properly sealed during installation. Winter road salt can corrode film edges if the car is not washed regularly. Prolonged direct sun exposure — particularly on cars parked on the south side of buildings during summer — degrades vinyl faster than moderate shade exposure. Cars parked in covered parking or garages will generally see longer wrap lifespan than those left in the elements. Regular washing and occasional film-safe sealant reapplication will extend the life of either film type significantly.

Who Colour Change Wraps Make Sense For

Lease vehicles are perhaps the single best use case: you change the colour for the lease term, return it at the end, and the original paint is untouched — which satisfies most lease agreements. Car owners who want to experiment with a colour before committing to a respray also benefit: a wrap costs a fraction of a respray and avoids the permanence problem. Enthusiasts who like to change their car's look seasonally or every few years are the other natural constituency. Colour change wraps make less sense for vehicles that will be stored outdoors for many years without regular maintenance, or for owners who want a permanent appearance change — for that, a respray is the right answer.

Colour Change Wraps and PPF: Can You Do Both?

Yes — and for some vehicles it is the recommended combination. TPU colour change film already provides a degree of stone-chip protection, but if you want maximum protection on a high-use vehicle or one that sees a lot of highway driving, a full or partial PPF layer over the colour change film adds a meaningful barrier. The alternative is to use a colour change film with an integrated clear coat that provides some protection. We handle both approaches at JRS Auto Customs and can advise on the right combination for your car and usage. You can also explore our and work to see what's possible.
