Does a Colour Change Wrap Require an ICBC Update?

Does a Colour Change Wrap Require an ICBC Update?

Published

A colour change wrap transforms the look of a car completely. It also raises a practical question that comes up before most installs: does this need to be updated with ICBC? The short answer is: it depends. Here is what BC’s rules actually say, and what the process looks like if an update is required.

BC’s Rule on Vehicle Colour Changes

Under BC’s Motor Vehicle Act, vehicle owners are required to notify ICBC when the colour of a registered vehicle changes. This applies to any change that is not minor — meaning the colour recorded on the registration does not match the vehicle’s actual appearance. A colour change wrap that substantially alters the vehicle’s colour falls into this category, regardless of whether it is a vinyl wrap, PPF with a colour finish, or a full respray.

ICBC does not require the update before the wrap is installed. But if you are pulled over and the officer notes a colour discrepancy, or if you are involved in an accident, the vehicle’s registered colour is part of the record. It is a straightforward obligation and there is no penalty for updating it — only a risk in leaving it unchanged.

How to Update Your Colour with ICBC

The process for updating your vehicle’s registered colour with ICBC is done at an Autoplan broker office. You will need your vehicle’s registration documents, a piece of government-issued ID, and the new colour of the vehicle. If the wrap has a specific colour name or code — most colour change films list a product name and colour reference — bring that information. The broker will note the colour description in the vehicle record.

There is a small administration fee for the change. The updated colour appears on your vehicle record immediately. You do not need to have the vehicle inspected for a colour change alone — inspections are required for other changes such as structural modifications, but colour is handled as a paperwork update.

When the Update Is Especially Worth Doing

If the vehicle is financed or leased, your lender or leasing company will have the original colour on file. Most lenders require notification of significant vehicle modifications, and updating the ICBC record creates a paper trail that protects you if the vehicle is ever assessed at the end of a lease or as part of an insurance claim.

If you are considering removing the wrap at some point — many wraps are temporary — you can update the colour back to the original at any time. ICBC colour updates are reversible and there is no restriction on how often you can change the registered colour. This makes wraps a practical way to change a vehicle’s appearance without committing to a permanent respray.

What About Temporary Wraps?

What ICBC Considers a Substantial Colour Change

ICBC uses a practical test rather than a precise rule: if a reasonable person looking at the vehicle would describe its colour as materially different from what is on the registration, an update is required. Going from white to black, or from silver to red, clearly meets this threshold. Subtle shifts — a slightly different shade of the same colour family, or a colour that is broadly similar to the original — may not require a change. When in doubt, the safest approach is to update it. There is no penalty for reporting a change that turns out not to be necessary.

The Timing of the Update

There is no deadline for reporting a colour change, but leaving it for months or years increases the practical risk. If the vehicle is involved in an accident during that period, the discrepancy between the registration and the actual appearance could cause delays in the insurance process. Most owners who plan a colour change update their registration within a few weeks of the install — it is a short errand and it removes one variable from any future claim or transfer.

If a wrap is clearly temporary — a promotional wrap, a seasonal colour change, or a wrap expected to be removed within weeks — the practical risk of not updating is low. But if the wrap is intended to be on the vehicle for months or years, it is worth the trip to an Autoplan broker. The fee is minor and the process takes under twenty minutes.
