Dash Cams for Vancouver Drivers
Published
Vancouver has a documented problem with vehicle-related crime, and dash cameras have become one of the most practical security investments a car owner can make. Parking monitoring mode — the ability of a camera to record while the car is parked and unattended — has become a key feature for Vancouver drivers who park on the street, in parkades, or in lots where incidents of opportunity crime are higher. Here is what Vancouver drivers need to know before buying one.
What Parking Mode Actually Does
A dash cam with parking mode records continuously or in triggered intervals when the engine is off. There are two main types of triggering: G-sensor triggering, which activates recording when a impact or movement is detected, and time-lapse mode, which records a frame every few seconds to conserve storage while maintaining a continuous record.
Time-lapse mode is the more practical setting for Vancouver drivers who park in busy parkades or on streets with regular foot traffic. It uses less storage and makes it easier to review a full parking session without scrubbing through hours of static footage.
Impact-triggered mode alone can miss slow-moving events — a person leaning on a car, a door opening into an adjacent vehicle, or someone trying to access a handle — that do not generate enough force to trigger the G-sensor. Most cameras allow both modes to run simultaneously.
Power and Battery Considerations
Parking mode draws power from the car's battery. Most dash cam manufacturers recommend using a dedicated battery pack or hard-wiring kit with a voltage cut-off to prevent draining the car battery below the level needed to start the engine. This is a genuine risk in cold Vancouver winters when batteries are already under additional load.
A battery pack separate from the car battery avoids this risk entirely and is the safer option for vehicles that make short trips, which are common in Metro Vancouver. Short trips do not fully recharge a battery that has been depleted by parking mode recording.
Vancouver-Specific Considerations
The Lower Mainland has a higher rate of vehicle crime per capita than many other Canadian cities, and hit-and-run incidents in parkades are common enough that security camera footage is frequently cited in neighbourhood social media groups. A dash cam with parking mode provides a record of any incident while the car is unattended.
Vancouver's climate adds a practical consideration: cold temperatures affect battery performance and some dash cam batteries. Cameras mounted behind the windscreen in cold weather can experience condensation build-up inside the lens housing. Choosing a camera with a built-in heating element for cold climates addresses this issue.
Insurance and Legal Considerations
In BC, dash cam footage can be submitted as evidence in ICBC claims and disputes. However, there are rules around its use. Recording audio without the knowledge of occupants in the vehicle can raise privacy considerations under BC's privacy legislation. Front-facing footage of road events is generally accepted without issue.
Dash cam footage of incidents on private property — parkade walls, loading zones, private lots — can be useful for establishing fault in minor incidents. For hit-and-runs in parkades, having a timestamped record of the event with a clear image of the other vehicle is one of the most effective tools for pursuing a recovery claim.
What to Look For
Key features for Vancouver drivers include: a parking mode with either time-lapse or impact triggering, or both; a cold-climate heating element to prevent condensation; a wide-angle front camera covering the area ahead of the bonnet as well as the road; and a rear camera if you want coverage of the area behind the vehicle. Storage capacity of 64GB or higher allows several hours of parking mode recording at reasonable quality.
Image quality at night matters in Vancouver's dark winters and parkade lighting. Look for a camera with a large aperture and good low-light sensor performance, not just high resolution. Resolution above 1080p on a small windscreen-mounted camera can reduce low-light performance compared to a well-tuned 1080p sensor.
Installation
JRS Auto Customs can advise on dash cam installation for your specific vehicle. Ask about it at your next maintenance appointment.
