Get Your Car Ready for Vancouver's Wet Season

Published

Vancouver summers are short and autumn comes fast. By October the rain has settled in, the roads are wet for weeks at a stretch, and the city spreads a layer of salt and gravel across every surface your car touches. Left unprotected, your vehicle spends the next six months absorbing damage that accumulates quietly and becomes expensive to fix. The good news: a little preparation in late summer and early autumn makes a measurable difference. Here is what to prioritise.

Protecting the paint: PPF and ceramic coating

Paint protection film and ceramic coating address two different vulnerabilities. PPF is a thick, self-healing urethane film that absorbs impacts — road gravel, parking door dings, the fine scratches that come from washing with a dirty mitt. It is the right call for vehicles that spend time on the street, in parkades, or logging highway kilometres. Ceramic coating, by contrast, is a silica-based liquid that bonds to the paint surface and makes it highly resistant to water, UV, and chemical contamination. It does not absorb impacts, but it makes the surface far easier to clean and significantly reduces the mineral staining that Vancouver's hard water leaves behind.

The two work well together. PPF on the front end handles the physical abuse; ceramic coating on the rest of the car handles the chemical and UV exposure. For daily drivers with a reasonable budget, that combination gives you the broadest protection available. If you are choosing one, PPF is the higher priority for painted surfaces that take the most stone chips — the front bumper, hood, and side mirrors.

Protecting the interior from rain and grit

Vancouver summers do not feel long enough. By the time you have had the car washed a few times, the interior has absorbed a season of wet shoes, sandy sandals, and the general moisture that comes with a coastal climate. All-weather floor mats catch the worst of it before it reaches your carpet. They are not a luxury — they are a practical upgrade that preserves the resale value of your interior and makes winter cleaning manageable. Custom-fit mats from brands like WeatherTech or Husky Liners stay in place better than universal options and are easier to hose out when they need it.

On the paint side, the single most impactful thing you can do in September is get the car decontaminated and a layer of protection on before the real rain starts. Old wax, road film, and tree sap all create a surface that holds contamination against your clear coat. A proper decontamination wash followed by a ceramic sealant or coating gives the protection something solid to bond to.

Making a protection plan that fits your car and your budget

Not every vehicle needs the same level of care. A daily commuter with street parking faces different risks than a car that lives in a garage and is driven on weekends. Work through these three questions: How is your car parked overnight and during the workday? Is the original paint in good condition, or does it have existing swirl marks, chips, or oxidation? Do you plan to keep the car for more than three years, or are you likely to sell or trade it within that window?

The answers tell you where to spend. If you park on the street, PPF on the front is worth considering before the winter gravel season starts. If your paint is already showing its age, a paint correction followed by ceramic coating restores the surface and protects what you have. If you are selling within a year or two, all-weather mats and a ceramic topper on the exterior give the car a presentation boost without significant investment.

JRS Auto Customs in Vancouver offers all of these services — PPF, ceramic coating, interior protection, and seasonal detailing. Our team can assess your vehicle and help you build a protection plan that matches your situation. Start with a /ceramic or /ppf consultation to see what makes sense for your car. The work takes a few days and will put you in a much better position when the rain really sets in.
