What Really Happens During a Full Car Detail

Published

If you have never had your car professionally detailed, handing it over for a full day can feel like a leap of faith. You get it back looking completely different, but what actually happened in between? Here is a plain account of what a full detail involves so you know what to expect.

What a Full Detail Is and Is Not

A full detail is not a wash. A wash removes surface dirt. A detail removes everything washing cannot: bonded contamination from the paint, embedded brake dust from wheel faces, oxidation from the clear coat, and grime from interior surfaces that vacuuming alone cannot shift. A full detail is also not paint correction. Correction is a separate repair step involving multi-stage machine polishing to remove clear coat and restore optical clarity. A detail includes decontamination and protection but not correction.

The Exterior Wash and Decontamination

The detail starts with a pre-wash foam soak — a thick layer of snow foam applied to the entire body and left to dwell. The foam encapsulates and lifts the largest dirt particles before contact washing begins, which prevents wash marring. After the foam soak, the car is washed by hand using the two-bucket method: one bucket with shampoo, one with clean water to rinse the mitt after every pass.

After drying, an iron remover is applied to the paint and wheel faces. It reacts with iron particulate and converts it into a soluble compound that rinses away. A clay bar treatment follows, which physically pulls any remaining bonded contamination from the paint. The result is a glass-smooth surface when you run your hand across it.

The Interior Detail

The interior starts with a thorough vacuum of all floor areas, seat rails, and the boot. All surfaces are then wiped with appropriate cleaners: dashboard, door cards, centre console, and seat materials. A steam cleaner or extractor is used on heavily soiled carpet and floor mats. Extraction removes grime that has worked into the carpet pile over months of use — surface wiping only cleans the top. Glass is cleaned inside and out, and the final step is an appropriate air freshener or odour treatment.

Paint Inspection and Protection

After decontamination, the paint is inspected under strong light to assess the condition of the clear coat. For a standard full detail, a protection step follows: either a spray sealant, wax, or ceramic coating depending on the service level. Protection seals the clean paint surface, adds gloss, and makes future washing easier. Without it, contamination begins bonding to the paint again within weeks.

Wheels and Tyres

Wheels are cleaned last, after the bodywork is protected. An acid-free wheel cleaner is applied throughout the wheel face and barrel, agitation brushes are used on the barrel and behind the rim edge, and the wheel is rinsed clean. Tyre dressing is applied to the sidewalls in a matte or satin finish, which restores tyre appearance and protects the rubber from UV and oxidation.

How Long Does It Take

A full detail on a car in average condition takes four to eight hours, depending on vehicle size and condition. A heavily soiled interior or a car that has not been detailed before takes longer. A car in good condition that is regularly washed is at the faster end. Most detailers schedule full details on a next-day basis, because the car needs to dry fully after extraction before it is returned.

How to Prepare for a Detail

Remove all personal items from the interior before the appointment. The detailer cannot clean under a pile of belongings. If there are specific concerns — a stain, an odour, a scratch — mention them on arrival so time can be allocated. If the car has a pet hair issue, let the detailer know in advance: it requires a specialist treatment not included in a standard interior detail.
