What Does a Full Detail Actually Include?
Published
The term detail is used loosely in the car industry. A basic interior wipe-down at a car wash gets called a detail. So does a three-day paint correction and ceramic coating on a show car. The range is enormous, and for a Vancouver driver the question is not which end of the range your car needs — it is what level of work is appropriate for how you use the car and what you want from it.
What a Full Detail Covers That a Car Wash Does Not
The distinction between a car wash and a detail is primarily about contamination removal. A car wash removes loose dirt and surface grime from the exterior. A detail removes bonded contamination that does not come off with soap and water: iron fallout from brake dust and rail filings, mineral deposits from water spots, tree sap, industrial pollution residue, and the oxidation layer that builds on neglected paint over time.
On the exterior, a proper detail includes a decontamination wash — typically using an iron remover applied to the paint surface, followed by a clay bar or clay mitt to lift bonded contamination from the clear coat. The vehicle is then inspected under good lighting for swirl marks, water spots, and oxidation. If present, paint correction is recommended before any protective coating is applied.
On the interior, a car wash interior clean involves wiping visible surfaces. A detail involves removing the seats if necessary to access areas under the floor mats, cleaning the door jambs, the boot floor, the spare tyre well, the centre console vents, and the instrument cluster housing — the areas that accumulate contamination that is not visible from the driver seat.
What Different Detail Levels Actually Mean
A maintenance detail — the most common service — focuses on keeping an already-protected or reasonably maintained vehicle in good condition. It includes a decontamination wash, a light machine polish to remove surface oxidation and restore gloss, and interior cleaning. This is the appropriate level for a car that has been detailed before and is being maintained between more intensive sessions.
A correction detail involves removing swirl marks and surface defects with a more aggressive polish or compound, often using a dual-action polisher. This is the level of work required before applying ceramic coating or PPF, or to restore the paint on a car that has not been detailed in a year or more.
A show detail involves all of the above plus engine bay cleaning, undercarriage rinse, glass decontamination on both sides, interior leather conditioning, and trim restoration. It is the level of work that precedes a concours event or a professional photoshoot.
How Often a Vancouver Car Needs a Detail
For a Vancouver car with no surface protection, a maintenance detail every three to four months is a reasonable target. In winter, the salt and road film accumulate faster; in summer, pollen and tree sap are the primary contaminants. A car with ceramic coating or PPF can extend that interval, but the underlying contamination still builds and should be removed on schedule.
The interior should be detailed more frequently than the exterior, particularly for vehicles with leather upholstery. Leather conditioning every three months prevents the cracking and UV fade that occurs when conditioners are not applied. For vehicles with all-weather mats, the carpet underneath the mats should be cleaned at least twice a year — that is where the grit and moisture that causes corrosion and odour accumulates.
Matching the Detail Level to Your Car and Budget
For a car that is kept for three years or less, a correction detail before selling or trading in makes more financial sense than regular correction details throughout ownership. For a car that is kept for longer, regular maintenance details are the more cost-effective approach.
For a car with existing surface protection, a maintenance detail keeps both the protection and the paint in the best condition. Our maintenance detailing service starts with a vehicle assessment to determine which detail level matches the car and the owners expectations.
