What Does a Full Detail Actually Include?
Published
A valet clean makes your car look presentable. A full detail makes it clean at a biological level and restores the surfaces that a quick wash-and-vacuum cannot reach. If you have been wondering whether to book one, or you have already booked one and want to know what to expect, here is a plain-language breakdown of what a professional full detail covers.
What a Car Wash Does Not Do
Most automatic and touchless car washes use high-pressure water and detergents to clean what is immediately visible. They do not remove the contamination bonded to the paint surface: the iron fallout from brake dust, the tree sap that lands on your roof, the rail dust from the SkyTrain corridor, the road film that accumulates on every panel over the winter months. When those contaminants sit long enough, they begin to etch into the clear coat, forming the dull haze that no amount of washing removes.
A full detail starts where the car wash stops.
Exterior Decontamination: The Part That Makes the Biggest Difference
Before any correction or protection is applied, the paint surface is stripped of bonded contamination in two stages. An iron remover dissolves ferrous particles from brake dust and industrial fallout without abrasives. A clay bar then picks up whatever remains - the non-ferrous contamination that the chemical bath leaves behind. The result is a paint surface that feels completely smooth, like new glass, and which has been prepared properly for the next step.
This decontamination stage is what separates a professional detail from a thorough wash. It is also the part most often skipped by mobile detailers working under time pressure.
Paint Correction: Fixing What Washing Cannot
After decontamination, the paint is assessed for oxidation, swirl marks, water spots, and light scratches. A multi-stage paint correction uses progressively finer compounds to refine the clear coat surface, removing the defects that dull the finish and restoring depth and gloss. One-stage correction addresses surface marring; two-stage correction goes deeper and is what gives most daily-driver vehicles a genuinely new-car appearance.
Paint correction is a separate service from a full detail, and the two are often bundled. Your detailer will assess the paint condition before quoting. Cars with deeper clear coat damage may need a cut-and-polish that goes beyond the standard detail scope.
Interior: Every Surface, Not Just the Visible Parts
A full interior detail covers surfaces most people never clean: the seams of the dashboard, the vents, the centre console cubbies, the seat rails under the seats, the parcel shelf, the door jambs. The process typically involves a full vacuum including the boot and spare tyre well, steam cleaning of dashboard, centre console, and door panels to shift grime without saturating electronics, leather cleaning and conditioning or fabric extraction and shampooing depending on the interior material, and glass interior cleaning on both sides to remove the film that builds up from condensation and dashboard outgassing.
A detailer who only cleans what is visible is doing a valet clean. A full detail is more thorough and takes correspondingly longer.
Protection: Wax, Sealant, or Ceramic Coating
Once the paint surface is clean and corrected, a protective layer is applied to slow the return of contamination and add gloss. Natural wax - carnauba or beeswax blends - provides warm gloss and water-beading for three to six weeks. Sealant - synthetic polymer - bonds to the paint surface for longer-lasting protection, typically three to six months, with harder gloss and stronger chemical resistance. Ceramic coating - a silica-based semi-permanent layer applied as a liquid and allowed to cure - provides the longest protection and the strongest hydrophobic effect.
A professional ceramic coating, such as the Gyeon Mohs EVO system applied at JRS Auto Customs, outlasts both wax and sealant by a significant margin and provides a surface that water and dirt simply do not adhere to.
What Comes After the Detail
A full detail is not a one-time fix. How you maintain the car after it determines how long the results last. In Vancouver's winter environment, a rinse-free wash every couple of weeks and a top-up of protection in the spring will extend the results significantly.
For ongoing care, JRS Auto Customs offers a
maintenance wash and protection serviceHow Long Does a Full Detail Take?
A full interior and exterior detail on a standard passenger vehicle takes four to eight hours, depending on the size of the vehicle and the condition of the paint and interior when it arrives. Cars with significant contamination, pet hair, or heavy soiling take longer. Your detailer should give you a realistic estimate based on condition, not just vehicle class.
JRS Auto Customs provides a full detail service covering decontamination, correction, interior restoration, and protection. Book a consultation to discuss what your vehicle needs, or bring it in for an assessment.
