What Full Interior Detailing Covers in a Vancouver Car
Published
Vancouver drivers spend more time in their cars than most people realise. Commutes on the North Shore, weekend trips to the Interior, daily ferry runs — the interior of your car is a space you live in. When it starts to smell like a wet dog, look grey under the floor mats, and have a dashboard that catches every fingerprint, that is the interior telling you it needs more than a wipe-down.
A full interior detail is not the same as a car wash. It is not the same as a valet clean. It is a systematic, multi-step process that addresses contamination, oxidation, and wear in every surface inside the cabin. Here is what it actually covers.
The Assessment: What Gets Checked First
A professional detailer starts by evaluating every interior surface separately: carpet, upholstery, leather or synthetic seats, hard plastics, soft-touch dashboards, door panels, centre console, and glass. Each surface has a different contamination profile and requires different products and techniques.
In Vancouver cars, the most common issues we find are: salt residue in carpet fibres (especially under floor mats and in the foot wells), mould or mustiness from moisture that was not fully dried after a wet drive, UV fading on the driver-side dashboard and left-side leather bolsters, and accumulated grime in air vents and seat rail mechanisms.
Deep Extraction and Decontamination
Most interior dirt sits in three layers. Surface dirt you can see and brush off. Embedded particulate in carpet fibres and upholstery weave. And bonded contamination — the salt, oil, and moisture combination that adheres to rubber mats, floor carpet edges, and plastic trim crevices.
A full detail addresses all three layers. Extraction uses a wet-vac or extractor with appropriate cleaning solution to flush particulate from carpet fibres, followed by forced-air drying. Steam cleaning is used on hard surfaces and for sanitisation without chemical residue. Chemical APC (all-purpose cleaner) is applied to handle oil-based contamination on plastics and rubber. Each step prepares the surface for the next, and skipping a layer means the result does not last.
Leather Care: What Beyond the Surface
Leather seats in Vancouver cars face a particular challenge: moisture and UV. Rain-soaked clothing leaves damp patches on seats that, if not dried properly, allow mould to establish in the leather's stitching. UV rays through the windscreen fade and crack the driver-side bolster faster than the rest of the seat.
Proper leather care after cleaning includes conditioning to restore moisture and flexibility to the hide, and a UV-protective sealant to slow future fading. A detailer who only sprays leather cleaner and wipes it off is not doing the job completely — conditioning is what keeps the leather from cracking over time.
Odour Elimination, Not Just Masking
The most common complaint from Vancouver car interiors is smell: mustiness from moisture, dog odour, tobacco residue, or the general staleness of a car that has had a lot of use. Air fresheners mask smell temporarily. A proper interior detail eliminates it.
Elimination means identifying and treating the source. Odour molecules bind to carpet fibres, seat foam, headliner material, and HVAC duct lining. Treatment involves extractor-based cleaning to flush fibres and foam, followed by an antimicrobial fog or treatment in the HVAC system to address duct lining contamination. Without treating the HVAC system, pet or smoke odours return within a few weeks regardless of how clean the surfaces look.
What You Can Do at Home vs What Needs a Professional
Regular vacuuming with a Crevice tool, wiping plastics with a microfibre and mild APC solution, and cleaning cup holders and centre console regularly are all worth doing and do not require a shop. Protecting leather with a conditioner every few months is something a careful owner can handle.
What is harder to do at home is extraction-level carpet cleaning — getting enough solution in and enough out of carpet fibres without leaving the carpet damp enough to grow mould. Steam sanitisation of the HVAC system and full interior extraction with professional equipment are jobs that benefit from the right tools and training.
If your car has been through a particularly wet season or has persistent odour issues, a professional interior detail is worth the investment. See our maintenance and detailing page for a full breakdown of what each interior service includes.
