When Your Headlights Need Restoration in Vancouver

Published

Plastic headlight lenses oxidise over time. It is a gradual process that most owners do not notice until the car is parked next to a newer one, or until the low-beam pattern on the road becomes noticeably uneven. In Vancouver, the combination of UV exposure from high-angle summer sun and persistent moisture through the wet season accelerates this more than most drivers realise.

Why Vancouver Headlights Deteriorate Faster

Ultraviolet radiation breaks down the outer layer of polycarbonate lenses, causing the surface to become chalky and opaque. This is the primary cause of the yellowing and hazing that gives older headlights a cloudy appearance. Vancouver summers deliver significant UV, and the damage accumulates year after year even on cars that are garaged during the day.

Moisture is the secondary factor. Condensation inside the headlight housing indicates that the seal between the lens and the housing has degraded. Moisture inside the housing accelerates oxidation of both the inner lens surface and the reflector behind the bulb, which reduces light output at the same time as the outer lens is clouding over. This is a different problem from surface oxidation and requires the housing seal to be addressed as well.

Restoration vs Replacement

Headlight restoration removes the oxidised outer layer of the polycarbonate lens using progressively finer abrasive compounds, then seals the exposed surface with a UV-resistant lacquer. On lenses where the oxidation is surface-level and the plastic has not yet crazed or warped, restoration reliably restores 80 to 90 percent of the original light transmission. The result is comparable to new lenses at a fraction of the cost of replacement.

Replacement is warranted when the lens plastic has developed a pattern of fine cracks called crazing, when the housing seal is so degraded that condensation returns within weeks of restoration, or when the reflector behind the bulb has corroded significantly. We assess each headlight before recommending either path.

Protecting Headlights After Restoration

The newly sanded and lacquered surface is more vulnerable to UV than factory-sealed polycarbonate. Applying paint protection film to the headlight lens after restoration extends the restored clarity significantly — PPF on headlights is one of the most cost-effective uses of film on any vehicle, because headlights are high-impact areas for stone chips and the film adds UV resistance as well as chip protection.

Clear PPF on headlights is a common addition when a full-front or full-body PPF installation is being done. It adds minimal cost to the overall job and prevents the restoration from needing to be repeated within a few years.

When to Address Headlight Clarity

Reduced headlight output affects safety before it becomes visually obvious. If you have noticed that oncoming traffic seems less aware of your vehicle at night, or that road markings are harder to see in wet weather, the headlights are worth inspecting. The provincial road safety inspection does check headlight function, and severely oxidised headlights can contribute to a failed inspection.

BC's annual vehicle inspection does check headlight function and light output alignment. Deteriorated headlights can contribute to a failed inspection, particularly in the wet season when the contrast between the clouding on the outer lens and the brighter centre of the beam becomes more obvious to an inspector. If your car is due for inspection in the autumn or winter, this is one item worth resolving before you book.

We restore headlights as part of detailing work and also handle PPF coverage on headlight lenses. If yours have begun to look cloudy, come and have a look — we will tell you honestly whether restoration or replacement is the right call for your vehicle.See our PPF options for headlights and full-front coverage.
