How Vancouver's Climate Affects Your Car Interior Year Round

How Vancouver's Climate Affects Your Car Interior Year Round

Published

The thing that makes Vancouver's interior care different from most other Canadian cities is not the temperature — it is the humidity and the rain pattern. Moisture does not just get on your car; it gets inside it, in places that are difficult to dry out, at times when you have no idea it is happening. Understanding how BC's wet season drives interior wear tells you when to act, and what for.

How BC's Wet Season Gets Into Your Interior

The primary path is the floor. Snow, slush, and rain on your shoes transfers enough moisture to saturate the factory floor mats and carpet over a wet winter. Even with rubber all-weather mats, moisture sits in the seams and edges where the mat meets the sill, and evaporates slowly between drives. The second path is condensation: on a cold morning after a mild night, the interior glass fogs up as warm, moist cabin air meets cold windows. That moisture then runs down the A-pillar and door card, into seals and wiring harnesses behind the trim. Neither of these is visible until the smell appears.

Mould and bacterial growth start in the carpet pad — below the floor mats, below where you can see or vacuum. By the time you notice the smell, the contamination has spread into the underlay and into the foam of the seats. This is the point where a basic clean stops working and a full interior detail becomes necessary.

What Vancouver Road Salt Does to Interior Materials

Salt does not stay outside. Shoes carry it in, and it dissolves into the moisture on the floor. Saltwater solution is hygroscopic — it absorbs more moisture from the air — which means salt on your carpet actually keeps that area damp longer than a dry surface nearby. On leather seats, dissolved salt sits in the grain and draws moisture to itself, effectively keeping the surface damp even when the rest of the cabin has dried out. Left untreated through a full BC winter, salt contamination in leather accelerates cracking and discolouration in the seat bolster and thigh support areas — exactly the areas that see the most flex and wear.

The remedy is straightforward but timing matters. Leather should be cleaned and conditioned before the salt has had weeks to work into the grain. In practice, the right window is late autumn — before the worst of the wet season — when the interior has dried out from summer but the cold and rain have not yet saturated everything. Conditioning in November after the first salt exposure is better than conditioning in February when the damage is already advancing.

The Sunroof Drain Problem Nobody Talks About

Sunroof-equipped vehicles are common in Vancouver — BMWs, Audis, Teslas, Subarus — and their sunroof drain channels are a hidden source of interior water damage that most owners do not know about until the carpet is soaked. The drains are small silicone tubes running from the sunroof gutter down the A-pillar and through the firewall into the engine bay or wheel well. Leaves, pine needles, and fine debris堵塞 these tubes, usually in October and November. Once blocked, water from rain or the car wash backs up into the cabin through the A-pillar trim and winds up in the footwell.

If your car has a sunroof and you have never had the drains cleared, book it before the heavy rain arrives. It takes under an hour, prevents thousands of dollars in water damage, and is included in a full interior detail at JRS.

When a Basic Clean Is Enough and When It Is Not

If the interior smells normal, the surfaces look clean, and there is no visible discolouration on the carpet or seats, a thorough vacuum, surface wipe-down, and glass clean is sufficient maintenance. If there is a persistent smell that returns within a day or two of cleaning, or if you can see darker patches under the floor mats, the contamination is deeper than surface cleaning can reach. That is the point to bring the car in for a full interior detail rather than attempting another surface clean that will not hold.

A full interior detail at JRS includes removing the seats on affected vehicles, extracting the carpet and underlay, treating the floor pan for moisture and bacterial contamination, cleaning and conditioning all leather surfaces, and clearing sunroof drains. It is a different category of work from a surface clean — and it is the service that actually solves the problem when surface cleaning has stopped working.

A Practical Interior Care Schedule for Vancouver

The BC interior care schedule is simple: leather clean and condition in late October before salt season peaks; full interior extraction and sanitisation once per year, best timed to late spring when the worst of the wet weather has passed and the interior can dry completely; sunroof drain check in September or October before the heavy rain arrives. Book a full interior detail if it has been more than a year, or if the smell has come back after a recent clean.
