Mobile vs Shop Detailing: Which Is Right for You
Published
If you have been looking into having your car detailed, you have probably encountered two broad options: mobile detailing, where the technician comes to your location, and shop-based detailing, where you bring the car to a fixed location. Both have genuine advantages, and the right choice depends on what you actually need done, how you use your car, and what your time is worth.
What Mobile Detailing Does Well
Mobile detailing is most effective for maintenance cleans and surface-level work: a regular exterior wash and dry, interior wipe-down and vacuum, window cleaning, and tire dressing. For cars already in reasonably clean condition and needing regular upkeep between deeper details, mobile service removes the friction of driving to a shop, parking, and waiting.
Mobile detailing also works well for cars difficult to bring to a shop - vehicles used daily, that cannot be left at a location for hours, or that need to be available on short notice. A mobile detailer can come to your office car park on a lunch break or to your home in the evening and work without you needing to account for the car being away.
The Limitations of Mobile Detailing
The honest limitation of mobile detailing is equipment. A mobile unit carries what fits in a van, which constrains the tools and products available on-site. Deep carpet extraction, which requires a truck-mounted extraction machine, is not possible from a mobile setup. Paint correction requiring dual-action polishers and consistent power is difficult on-site. Full interior restoration on heavily soiled vehicles is constrained by water access, drainage, and available space.
Weather is also a practical constraint. A mobile detailer cannot work effectively in heavy rain, extreme cold, or direct sun that creates surface temperature issues for compounds and coatings. Work that is half-done because of weather may not produce the expected result.
What Shop-Based Detailing Does Well
A fixed detailing shop has access to equipment that cannot be transported: truck-mounted extraction systems for deep carpet and upholstery cleaning, paint thickness gauges, dual-action and rotary polishers running on stable power, spray-down areas with proper drainage, and climate-controlled environments for coating application and curing.
Shop detailing is the right choice for work requiring the vehicle to be stationary for several hours: paint correction, ceramic coating application, PPF installation, and full interior restoration on vehicles with heavy soiling or mould. The shop environment means work is not interrupted by weather or limited by available space.
A shop can also assess your vehicle in the context of broader experience: a detailer who has worked on dozens of Tesla interiors, for example, has seen the specific challenges of different model dash layouts and seat materials and knows what products and techniques work best.
The Real Cost Comparison
Mobile detailing is not necessarily cheaper once you account for your full time cost and the potential need to redo work that could not be completed properly on-site. A mobile detail at your office car park requires the car to be available for the duration and acceptance of whatever result weather and site conditions allow.
A shop visit means one trip, a controlled environment, and work completed to the shop standard rather than the standard achievable in a car park. For significant work, the total cost - including your time and the probability of a complete result - often favours the shop.
How to Decide
Mobile detailing is the right choice for: regular maintenance cleans on daily-driven cars without deep contamination; quick exterior attention before an event or after a long trip; interior refresh between deeper shop details.
Shop detailing is the right choice for: paint correction, ceramic coating, PPF application, or any coating work; deep carpet and upholstery extraction; full interior restoration; vehicles with significant contamination, mould, or soiling requiring truck-mounted equipment; any work where the result needs to be complete.
Many car owners use both: mobile maintenance details between deeper shop work, and an annual or bi-annual shop detail for the work requiring shop equipment and environment.
JRS Auto Customs is a fixed-location detailing shop in Vancouver with full equipment for paint correction, ceramic coating, PPF, and full interior restoration. Or book a consultation to discuss what type of detail your car needs.
