The Vancouver Monthly Car Maintenance Checklist

The Vancouver Monthly Car Maintenance Checklist

Published

Most Vancouver drivers know their car needs attention at certain times of year, but the specific tasks that matter in each month are not always obvious. This checklist covers what needs doing and when — specific to Vancouver's climate and road conditions.

March: Post-Winter Assessment and Spring Detail

March is when the worst of the winter damage becomes visible. Begin with a full exterior wash to remove the road salt and grime accumulated over the wet months. Inspect the windscreen for any chips that may have appeared over winter — a chip repaired before it cracks costs a fraction of a replacement.

Check tyre pressure and tread depth. Tyres lose pressure in cold weather and the pressure reading on a cold tyre in March may be significantly lower than it was in October. Uneven pressure between tyres indicates a slow leak that should be investigated. Inspect the battery — cold weather accelerates battery failure, and March is when a weakened battery typically shows its first symptoms.

Book a spring detail that includes an iron-removing pre-wash, a clay bar treatment, and an assessment of the paint protection. If ceramic coating or PPF is in place, check whether the hydrophobic surface needs refreshing. Arrange undercarriage rinse if it was not done in autumn.

April to June: Regular Wash and Paint Care

The drier months are when the exterior is most visible and road film accumulation is slower. Wash every two to three weeks using the two-bucket method. After each wash, inspect the paint surface for any new stone chips — the winter road surface breaks produce chips that appear in spring even on roads you have driven hundreds of times before.

Check windscreen wiper blades. Vancouver's wet season wears wiper rubber faster than drier climates. Streaking or skipping wipers should be replaced — the rubber deteriorates before it looks obviously cracked. May is the most practical replacement month, before the heavy rain of autumn.

Inspect all exterior lights — fog lights, brake lights, turn signals, and licence plate bulbs. Burnt-out bulbs are common after winter vibration. May and June are good months to replace them before the dark mornings return.

July to September: Pre-Winter Preparation

September is the most important preparation month in the Vancouver calendar. Book any outstanding cosmetic or protection work before October. This includes touch-ups for stone chips, any PPF repairs for lifting edges, and ceramic coating inspections.

Flush the windscreen washer fluid and switch to a winter-formulated fluid that resists freezing. Inspect the rear windscreen heater elements and the heated side mirror elements if equipped. Check the cabin air filter — a clogged filter reduces defrosting performance just when you need it most.

Inspect all tyres for even wear and adequate tread depth. BC law requires winter tyres or all-season tyres rated for severe snow conditions on most highway routes from October to March. Check the rating marking on the sidewall before the regulation deadline.

October to February: Wet-Season Maintenance

Wash the vehicle every two weeks minimum through the wet season. Road salt accumulates rapidly on paint and glass. Rinse the windscreen and headlights at every wash — salt residue on glass reduces visibility in rain.

After each major rain event, inspect the windscreen for new chips. After each drive on rough road surfaces, visually check that wheel alignment feels normal — a steering pull that appears after a rough road section may indicate suspension damage that should be addressed before winter roads make it worse.

Dry the windscreen interior with a clean microfibre cloth after fogging events. Check the door sill drain holes monthly — blocked drain holes trap moisture inside the door and accelerate corrosion from the inside out.

We maintain vehicles on a monthly and seasonal schedule for clients who prefer to have this tracked. We can also assess your vehicle at any point and advise on what is needed before winter arrives. Browse our maintenance services.
