PPF Maintenance: Paint Protection Film in Vancouver
Published
Paint protection film is one of the most durable protective finishes you can apply to your car. TPU-based films in particular are designed to withstand years of exposure to sun, salt, and moisture. But durable does not mean maintenance-free. The way you wash your PPF, the products you use on it, and the seasonal conditions you expose it to all affect how well it performs and how long it lasts. Here is a practical guide to PPF maintenance for Vancouver drivers.
Washing PPF: What to Use and What to Avoid
PPF should be washed with a pH-neutral car shampoo — the same type you would use on bare paint. Avoid abrasive brushes, stiff wash mitts, and anything that could scratch the film surface. A clean microfibre wash mitt and a two-bucket method is the right approach. Do not use degreaser or acidic wheel cleaner directly on the PPF surface: some wheel cleaners are formulated for bare alloy wheels and can affect the film's clear coat if left to dwell for extended periods.
Pressure washers are safe to use on PPF — more safely than on bare paint, in fact, since the film is more resilient to pressure than clear coat. However, avoid holding the nozzle very close to film edges and seams, particularly on a freshly installed film: high-pressure water directed at the edge can lift the film if it has not fully cured. Allow at least two weeks of cure time after installation before using a pressure washer near film edges.
Protecting PPF from Vancouver's Seasonal Threats
Winter road salt and coastal aerosol are the two environmental threats most relevant to PPF in Vancouver. Salt sitting on film edges can degrade the adhesive over time if it is not rinsed off. After a winter drive on salted roads, a thorough rinse — including the film edges — before the salt dries and crystallises is the single most effective maintenance action you can take for PPF in Vancouver. Coastal salt air in West Vancouver and waterfront neighbourhoods means the film surface is exposed to salt aerosol year-round. Regular washing removes this salt residue before it can affect the film's hydrophobic top coat.
Bird droppings, tree sap, and bug splatter should be addressed promptly on PPF as they would be on bare paint. Acidic contaminants left for extended periods can stain the film's clear coat. If they have dried and bonded to the film, a dedicated bug and tar remover applied with a microfibre cloth is the right approach — do not scrape or scrub aggressively.
When PPF Needs Attention
Edge lifting is the most common PPF issue in Vancouver's climate. It typically starts at the edge of a panel — particularly the front bumper lower edge, where road spray hits directly. If you notice an edge starting to lift, bring the car in promptly: a small lift can often be re-edged (cleaned and re-pressed) without replacing the film. A large lift that has been driven with for weeks, with debris under the film, may require a patch replacement. Catching it early makes the difference between a ten-minute repair and a full panel re-film.
Yellowing or discolouration of the film is worth monitoring. High-quality TPU films resist yellowing well, but lower-quality films or films that have been exposed to excessive heat or chemical exposure can discolour over time. If your film is more than five years old and showing discolouration, a shop assessment can determine whether replacement is warranted or whether surface oxidation can be addressed with a film-safe compound.
Re-Coating and Film-Safe Sealants
Some installers apply a top coat sealant over the PPF during installation. If yours did not, or if the top coat has worn over time, a PPF-safe hydrophobic sealant can be applied to restore water-beading behaviour and add a layer of chemical resistance. Not all spray sealants are film-safe: avoid products containing solvents that can affect the film's clear coat. JRS Auto Customs can advise on film-safe products and apply them as part of a PPF maintenance service. We also handle full PPF installation and edge repair. See our page for more on our PPF services.
