Why You Should Detail Your Car Before Winter in Vancouver
Published
Vancouver's winter arrives fast. By the time most drivers think to prepare their car for cold weather, the first salt application has already happened. The window for effective pre-winter preparation is narrow, and what you do in October and November makes a measurable difference to the condition your car is in come March. Here is what a proper pre-winter detail covers, and why it matters for your car specifically.
What Road Salt Does That a Normal Wash Misses
A standard wash removes surface dirt but leaves behind the things that actually cause damage. Road salt, industrial fall-out from the port and downtown traffic, and iron particles from brake dust embed themselves in the paint surface and in the tiny pores of the clear coat. A decontamination wash — using an iron remover and a clay bar — pulls these contaminants out before they have a chance to bond permanently. If your car was not decontaminated before last winter, those particles are still in the paint. Book a decontamination before salt season starts and you start from a clean surface rather than a contaminated one.
The second thing a normal wash misses is the underside of the car. Wheel arches, brake components, and the underbody all accumulate road salt through the autumn and winter. This is where corrosion actually starts on many Vancouver vehicles. A pressure wash with wheel arch attention and an underbody rinse removes the bulk of the salt residue before it has time to work. Cars that have never had the undercarriage washed will see the most benefit from this step.
Interior Moisture and What It Costs You in the Spring
Vancouver's high humidity through autumn and into winter creates moisture inside the cabin that most drivers do not notice until spring. Floor mats that have absorbed salt water from wet footwear develop mould and persistent odours. Leather seats that have not been conditioned absorb moisture and begin to crack. Dashboard surfaces and centre console plastics that are not treated with UV protection fade unevenly through the winter — the areas exposed to sunlight through the windscreen fade fastest. A pre-winter interior detail with conditioning and protection addresses all of these before the worst of the season arrives.
The cost of cleaning mouldy floor mats or restoring cracked leather in the spring is higher than the cost of preventing the problem in the autumn. If you use all-weather floor mats, pull them out and clean underneath them before winter. If you have leather seats, apply a conditioner before the wet season starts and again in January.
Paint Condition: Fix It Before Salt Season, Not After
Any existing stone chips, water spot etching, or clear coat oxidation present on your paint at the start of winter will be significantly worse by spring. Salt water works into stone chip damage and accelerates rusting in the exposed metal. Water spot etching in clear coat deepens when acidic rain and salt sit on the surface through the winter. The correct sequence is to correct the paint before applying any protection — and then apply protection on top of the corrected surface.
If you are planning to apply ceramic coating or paint protection film before winter, the paint must be decontaminated and corrected first. Applying either on top of contaminated or oxidised paint traps the contamination against the surface and makes later correction significantly harder. A properly prepped surface is the difference between a coating or film that lasts five years and one that starts failing in two.
The Pre-Winter Checklist
If you want to handle as much of this yourself as possible before bringing the car in, work through this list in order. Wash the car thoroughly, then apply an iron remover to the body panels and wheel arches. Rinse and dry. Apply a clay bar to the painted surfaces to remove any remaining bonded contamination. Machine polish any stone chips, water spots, or oxidation. Apply a fresh layer of wax or sealant if you are not going for ceramic coating. Pull out floor mats and clean underneath and around them. Condition leather seats. Apply a UV protectant to dashboard and centre console plastics. Rinse the undercarriage if you have access to a pressure washer.
If you would rather have this done properly in one visit, JRS Auto Customs offers pre-winter detail packages that cover decontamination, paint correction, interior conditioning, and undercarriage cleaning. The best time to book is now — before the autumn rush and before the first major salt application. JRS has been preparing Vancouver vehicles for winter since 2010 and can advise on which work is worth doing for your specific car and driving patterns.
