Seasonal Tyre Fitting: A Vancouver Driver's Practical Guide

Seasonal Tyre Fitting: A Vancouver Driver's Practical Guide

Published

The change of seasons in Vancouver is one of the most consequential maintenance moments for a vehicle with two sets of tyres. Getting the transition right — switching at the right time, checking the stored set properly, and storing the off-season tyres correctly — is worth the effort. Here is what to do, and in what order.

When to Switch: The Practical Timing for Vancouver

BC's Seasonal Tire Route Requirements apply to most mountain highways from October 1 through March 31. By regulation, winter or all-season tyres rated for severe snow conditions are required on those routes during that period. For the Lower Mainland roads themselves — city streets, suburban arterials, highways within the urban area — there is no year-round tyre requirement, but the practical timing recommendation is similar: switch when temperatures consistently drop below 7 degrees Celsius, or when the first forecast of snow or ice appears for your regular driving routes.

Most Vancouver drivers switch too late rather than too early. Waiting for the first cold snap and then scrambling for a fitting appointment is a predictable pattern that every tyre shop in the Lower Mainland sees every October. Booking your fitting appointment in September — while there is still no wait — means the transition happens before the first cold road conditions, and the vehicle is ready for the season.

Checking Your Tyres Before They Come Out of Storage

Before mounting your winter tyres, give them a proper inspection while they are still off the vehicle. Lay each tyre flat and check the tread depth with a gauge. In BC, the legal minimum is 3mm for all-season tyres on passenger vehicles — but for winter performance, most manufacturers recommend a minimum of 4mm. If a tyre has dropped below that threshold, it needs to be replaced, not mounted.

Check the sidewall for any signs of damage: cracks radiating from the bead area, bulges, cuts, or unusual weathering. Tyres stored without tyre covers or in direct sunlight can develop sidewall cracking even if they are not old by mileage. A tyre that shows sidewall cracking on inspection should not be mounted — it has degraded faster than its tread depth suggests.

Inspect the tyre bead — the edge that seals against the wheel rim. If there is any corrosion on the bead surface, or if the tyre has been stored flat on one side for an extended period, the bead may not seal evenly when mounted. A tyre that does not seat properly at the bead can cause a slow leak that slowly deflates the tyre over days or weeks.

Tyre Pressure and the Fitting Process

Tyres that have been in storage for months will have lost some air pressure. This is normal — all tyres leak down slowly over time. Before fitting, inflate each tyre to the door-sticker pressure for your vehicle, not the number moulded on the tyre sidewall. The vehicle manufacturer's pressure specification is what the suspension, handling, and braking systems were calibrated for.

When the tyres are fitted, have the shop re-check the lug nuts or bolts to the correct torque specification. Tyres mounted without a torque wrench — using an impact wrench set to approximate torque — are a common source of wheel separation incidents. The correct torque matters equally on steel wheels and alloy wheels, and on vehicles of all sizes.

After fitting, check the tyre pressure again after 50 to 100 kilometres of driving. The seating process can temporarily change the pressure reading. Set to the door-sticker pressure once the tyres have seated — not the pressure you started with.

Storing the Off-Season Tyres Correctly

How you store your summer tyres through the winter matters as much as how you stored the winter set through the summer. The best storage position is mounted on wheels, inflated to normal pressure, stacked flat or on their sides — not hanging from hooks, which distort the sidewall over months. If the tyres are stored without rims, stand them upright on a clean floor and rotate them a quarter turn every few weeks to avoid a flat spot developing in one position.

Keep tyres away from direct sunlight, hydrocarbons — solvents, fuels, lubricants — and ozone-generating equipment such as electric motors or some types of fluorescent lighting. A dark, cool, dry environment is the target. Tyre bags reduce exposure to light and ozone and are worth using if you are storing the tyres for more than a few months.

Temperature matters less than environment — a cold but dark and dry garage is better for tyre storage than a warm but sunny outdoor space. Outdoor storage, even under a carport, exposes tyres to UV, ozone, and temperature cycling that accelerates aging significantly.

Tyre Condition Across a Vancouver Winter: What to Watch

Winter tyres in Vancouver are subjected to more wet-road driving than their counterparts in most other Canadian cities. While they handle snow and ice well by design, their performance in the wet — particularly at motorway speeds in heavy rain — depends on tread depth and compound condition. Tyres that have completed several winter seasons may be at the lower end of their usable tread range and will perform less well in heavy rain.

Tyre pressure monitoring — TPMS — is worth paying attention to on vehicles that have the system fitted. Cold weather causes tyre pressure to drop, and a TPMS warning that comes on after the first cold night of the season is normal. Check and top up the tyre pressure when the warning appears, not when the next regular inspection is due.

For drivers who want to keep tyres on the vehicle through more of the year, all-season tyres rated for severe snow conditions — identified by the mountain and snowflake symbol — are a legitimate year-round option for most Lower Mainland driving. Tyre and wheel packages are available at JRS Auto Customs if you are considering a change of wheel set for seasonal use. A separate set of wheels mounted with winter tyres also reduces the seasonal swap labour cost, since there is no mounting and balancing each spring and fall. Book a consultation to discuss options if you are weighing whether a seasonal wheel and tyre set makes sense for how you drive.
