Spring Car Care: What Your Car Needs After Vancouver Winter

Published

Vancouver winters are not dramatic by Canadian standards — no sustained Arctic cold, no deep snow — but they are relentless in their variety. Rain, frost, road salt, leaf debris, coastal fog, and sudden temperature swings all act on your car from October through March. By spring, most vehicles are carrying a winter's worth of accumulated grime in places that are easy to ignore: the undercarriage, the wheel wells, the door hinges, the brake calipers. Spring is the right time to address all of it.

The Undercarriage: Where the Most Damage Hides

The undercarriage accumulates the highest concentration of road salt and calcium chloride of any part of the vehicle. It also accumulates gravel, sand, and organic debris from leaf litter. This mix of salt and moisture sits against steel suspension components, brake lines, exhaust hangers, and floor pan surfaces throughout the winter. A pressure wash of the undercarriage at a carwash that offers undercarriage spray — or a standalone undercarriage wash — removes the bulk of the salt and debris before it can cause further corrosion. This is one of the highest-return preventive maintenance actions available for any Vancouver vehicle.

Paint and Glass: Post-Winter Inspection

After a Vancouver winter, walk around your car in good daylight and inspect the paint. Look for areas where salt-laden water has dried on the surface — these often leave watermark etching rings that become permanent if not treated. Bird droppings and tree sap that landed during winter and were not cleaned immediately will have bonded to the clear coat. A clay bar decontamination treatment removes these bonded contaminants before they permanently etch the paint. After decontamination, inspect for any stone chips that have exposed bare metal: these should be touched up promptly to prevent rust from starting.

Windscreen and wiper inspection matters too. The rubber wiper blades have been operating in cold, wet conditions with grit on the glass all winter. Lift each blade and feel the edge: if it is hard, cracked, or no longer sits flush against the glass, it needs replacement. A failing wiper blade on the first spring rain is a frustrating and avoidable experience.

Tyres and Battery: Two Components That Winter Wears Hardest

Tyre tread depth should be checked at the start of spring. Winter driving — particularly on ice and in snow — accelerates uneven tyre wear. If the tread depth is approaching the legal minimum, the tyre needs replacing before the wet autumn season arrives. Check tyre pressure and top up as needed: temperature changes since January may have left your tyres over- or under-inflated relative to the specification.

Battery health should be assessed in spring, not just at the first cold snap. The battery that started your car reliably in January may be showing its age by April. If the battery is three years old or more, have it load-tested before the next cold season. Cold weather is the battery killer — and the damage is done in winter, not spring. Spring is when you discover it.

Fluids and seals

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and winter's temperature swings accelerate moisture uptake. A brake fluid test or replacement in spring removes moisture that accumulated over the winter months. Coolant should also be checked: if the colour has changed from its normal green, orange, or blue to a rusty brown, the corrosion inhibitors have depleted and the system needs a flush. Door seals, boot seals, and sunroof seals should be cleaned and treated with a rubber conditioner to restore flexibility after the drying effect of cold winter air.

JRS Auto Customs handles spring vehicle assessments as part of our standard maintenance services. We can run through the checklist above and advise on what needs immediate attention versus what can wait until summer. Browse our page or get in touch to book a spring inspection.
