What Summer Does to Your Car in Vancouver
Published
Vancouver summers do not look like summers in the rest of Canada. There are no prolonged heatwaves, no desert-dry roads, and no weeks of relentless sun. But the months between May and September bring a set of conditions that affect your car in ways that are easy to overlook when the weather is pleasant and the car is not being battered by winter road salt.
What Summer Actually Does to Your Car in Vancouver
The most obvious summer threat in Vancouver is UV exposure. Even through cloud cover, UV radiation is significant — particularly in July and August, when the sun angle is high and the days are long. UV breaks down automotive clear coat over time, causing oxidation, fading, and a loss of gloss. On darker-coloured cars, UV damage is more visible. On matte-finish vehicles, UV can cause slight discolouration if the finish was not formulated with adequate UV inhibitors.
Tree sap is a significant summer hazard in Vancouver. Parks, tree-lined streets in Shaughnessy and Kerrisdale, and forested areas around the North Shore all drop sap throughout the spring and summer. Sap that is left on a car's surface bonds to the clear coat and, if left for days, can etch into the finish and leave marks that require paint correction to remove.
Bird droppings are more active in summer — birds are feeding more and are more abundant near food sources and water. Bird droppings are highly acidic and will etch clear coat in a matter of hours on a hot day. Parking under trees provides shade but dramatically increases the chance of sap and bird droppings landing on the car.
Road dust and pollen accumulate on parked cars through the summer. When this combination is left to dry and is then washed off with a dry cloth or an automated car wash, it acts as an abrasive and creates micro-scratch swirl marks in the clear coat.
BC Ferries and Road Trip Conditions Add to Summer Wear
Vancouver drivers who use BC Ferries in the summer face a specific set of conditions: cars sit on the vehicle deck in enclosed, often humid conditions while the vessel is underway, then are exposed to open road conditions on the island. That combination — humidity on the ferry followed by highway speeds and warm temperatures — can push contaminants into the paint surface faster than normal.
For cars loaded with camping gear, bikes, or roof boxes for a summer road trip, the additional weight and aerodynamic drag change the conditions the car operates in. Braking distances increase, tyres run hotter, and brake dust accumulates more quickly on the wheels. After a long summer trip, cleaning the wheels and checking tyre condition is worth building into the routine.
Paint Protection That Helps Through the Summer
Ceramic coating creates a hydrophobic surface that reduces the adhesion of tree sap, pollen, and road grime. The beading effect means contaminants sit on top of the coating rather than bonding directly to the clear coat, and they rinse off more easily during a wash. This is particularly useful through the summer months when the combination of sap, pollen, and bird droppings is most active.
Paint protection film provides a physical barrier against the most damaging summer contaminants. Rock chips from highway driving — which increases in summer as more people drive to the islands and the mountain parks — can open bare metal patches on an unprotected car. PPF absorbs that impact and prevents the damage from reaching the paint. Bird droppings that sit on PPF for the same period as on bare clear coat are also easier to remove without leaving etch marks.
On cars with existing swirl marks or light oxidation from previous summers, a paint correction before the summer season removes the accumulated damage and restores gloss. This is most worthwhile if you are planning to apply ceramic coating or PPF, because both products bond best to a properly prepared surface.
Interior Care Through the Summer Months
Vancouver's interior surfaces face their own summer challenges. Prolonged sun exposure through a windscreen heats the cabin significantly, accelerating the off-gassing of plastics and adhesives, fading upholstery, and cracking leather that has not been conditioned. Vehicles with leather interiors that are parked outside regularly should be conditioned before the summer begins.
UV radiation also affects dashboard plastics and instrument clusters over time. A UV-protectant applied to dashboard surfaces slows the fading and cracking that comes from repeated thermal cycling in a hot car. Window tint applied to the windscreen and side windows reduces the heat and UV that enter the cabin, protecting both the interior surfaces and the comfort of passengers.
Summer is also when interiors accumulate the most smell and moisture — from wet swimwear left in the car, beach sand, and the general humidity of Vancouver summers. Running the air conditioning on the demist setting regularly helps keep the ventilation system dry and reduces the chance of mildew building up in the system.
Building a Summer Car Care Routine in Vancouver
The cars that come through a Vancouver summer in the best condition are the ones that get attention regularly, not only when something has gone visibly wrong. A practical summer routine for Vancouver drivers includes washing the car every week or two through the summer months, removing bird droppings and sap as soon as possible — ideally within a few hours — using a pH-neutral shampoo and a microfibre cloth, and checking tyre condition and brake dust levels after long trips.
If your car has taken a summer beating and the paint is showing the effects — swirl marks, fading, or etched spots — the best time to address it is before the next season of rain arrives. A paint correction in late summer or early autumn restores the surface and means the car is ready to handle whatever the autumn wet season brings.
JRS Auto Customs in Vancouver works with car owners through the year to keep vehicles in the best possible condition through every season. Whether you need a wash, a paint correction, ceramic coating, or PPF, we can advise on what makes sense for your car and how it is used through the summer months.
