When to Book Your Car In: A Vancouver Seasonal Guide

Published

One of the most common questions JRS Auto Customs hears from customers is simple: when is the right time to bring my car in? The answer depends on what you are having done, and the seasonal rhythm of Vancouver weather plays a real role in the timing.

When to Book Paint Protection (PPF and Ceramic Coating)

The best window for paint protection work in Vancouver is October through early December, before the heavy salt season starts in earnest. A car that goes into winter with fresh PPF or ceramic coating starts the season protected, rather than accumulating salt damage during the months when shops are busiest. Getting it done in autumn also means the car has dried fully after the application before the coldest months, which matters for ceramic coating cure times.

January through March is the most challenging period. Cold temperatures affect how PPF adhesive bonds and how ceramic coatings cure. Many shops, including JRS Auto Customs, can still apply protection through winter, but the process takes longer and the car needs to be indoors for longer after the work. If you miss the autumn window, early spring is the next best time: the work can be done before the spring rain season that deposits its own set of contaminants on paintwork.

Summer months from June through August are the most convenient for the shop but the least urgent from a protection standpoint. If your car does not yet have PPF or ceramic coating and you are planning to wait, summer is a reasonable time to book — just be aware that the road salt season is only a few months away after that.

When to Book Colour Change Wraps

Colour change wraps are more temperature-sensitive than ceramic coating. The vinyl needs to be applied in a controlled environment at a stable temperature, ideally above 15 degrees Celsius, for the adhesive to bond correctly. In Vancouver this means April through October is the most reliable window. Installing in the middle of winter increases the risk of edge lift as the material contracts in cold weather.

If you are planning to wrap your car before winter specifically to protect the original paint, book in September or October. The wrap will take the salt and stone chips through the winter, and you will enter spring with the factory paint in the same condition as the day you wrapped it.

When to Book Wheel Upgrades and Performance Work

Wheel upgrades and performance modifications have no strong seasonal dependency for the installation itself, but winter presents specific challenges. Tyre fitment, wheel alignment, and suspension work all need the car to be at operating temperature for precise settings. Tyre swap appointments in December and January are often booked out in advance as drivers scramble to switch from summer to winter tyres. If you need new wheels fitted for winter tyres, book early.

Performance tunes, exhaust installs, and suspension work are most commonly done in the spring and summer months when mechanics and dyno operators have more predictable availability. If you are planning a performance build, May through August gives the most flexibility on scheduling.

The Short Answer

If you are unsure when to book for your specific car and goals, JRS Auto Customs can advise on timing as part of the consultation. The right time to book is always sooner than the last minute, especially for paint protection work that benefits from being in place before the worst of the season arrives. Use the off-peak months of late summer for planning and consultation, and book your autumn appointment before the schedule fills.
