Windscreen Chip Repair vs Replacement in Vancouver

Windscreen Chip Repair vs Replacement in Vancouver

Published

A chip in your windscreen is one of those things that starts small and ends up costing significantly more than it should have. In Vancouver, the combination of winter road grit, spring frost, and the simple fact that highway driving in BC puts a lot of road debris in front of your car means most drivers will deal with a windscreen chip at some point. Whether it needs repair or replacement depends on a few specific factors that are worth understanding before you either ignore it or book a full replacement.

When a chip can be repaired

A windscreen chip repair uses a clear resin injected into the chip under pressure, filling the damaged glass and restoring structural integrity. When done well, the repair is difficult to see from inside the car and restores the full strength of the glass at that point. The key factors that determine whether a chip is repairable are the size of the chip, where it is located on the glass, and whether it has reached the edge of the windscreen.

A chip that is smaller than a twenty-five-cent coin, that has not cracked through to the edge, and that is not in the driver’s direct line of sight is generally a good candidate for repair. Bulls-eye chips, star breaks, and small cracks of up to about 15 centimetres can usually be repaired. The repair takes less than an hour and is significantly less expensive than a full replacement.

The speed at which you get a chip repaired matters. Dirt and moisture work into the chip quickly, and once the contamination is inside the damage area, a repair becomes less effective. In Vancouver’s rainy season, getting a chip repaired before the next significant rainfall makes a real difference to the quality of the result.

When replacement is the only option

A replacement is required when the chip has progressed to a crack that reaches the edge of the windscreen, when the crack is longer than about 30 centimetres, when there are multiple impact points in close proximity, or when the chip is directly in the driver’s line of sight in a way that repair resin would still be visible during normal driving. Once a crack reaches the edge of the glass, the structural integrity of the windscreen is compromised in a way that repair cannot restore.

Temperature changes — particularly the freeze-thaw cycle in a Vancouver winter — are the most common reason a repairable chip turns into a replacement. Water freezes inside the chip, expands, and pushes the crack forward. A chip that was repairable in October may be a replacement by February. Getting it repaired before winter is the most cost-effective approach.

How a windscreen replacement works in BC

In British Columbia, windscreen replacement is covered under the Autoplan Minor Repair benefit if you have basic Autoplan insurance — this covers repair at no cost and replacement with a deductible that is typically lower than your collision deductible. If you carry comprehensive coverage, windscreen replacement is usually covered with no deductible at all. Check with your insurer before booking — most will direct you to an approved glass shop and arrange the replacement directly.

The replacement itself takes two to three hours. The adhesive used to set the new windscreen needs time to cure before the car can be driven safely — most shops specify a minimum cure time before you take the car on the road. If you have a dashcam hardwired to the windscreen, the installation will need to be restored after the replacement.

After a replacement: what to watch for

After a windscreen replacement, keep the windows cracked slightly for the first hour of driving to allow the adhesive to begin its initial cure without trapping pressure. Avoid using the rear window defogger and the windscreen wipers for the first few hours if the shop advises it. A small amount of moisture or dust at the edge of the new glass is normal in the first 24 hours and should not be cause for concern. If you notice a smell of adhesive inside the cabin that persists beyond the first day, contact the shop.
