Rust Prevention Before Winter: A Vancouver Drivers Checklist
Published
Vancouver's annual road salt season begins in October and runs through to March. By the time the first frost arrives, the window for prevention has already started to close. This article covers what Vancouver drivers should check before winter — and what to do about it now, while there is still time.
The undercarriage, door sills, wheel arches, and lower body panels are the areas most exposed to road salt spray. Once corrosion takes hold, it progresses beneath paint and coatings, often invisibly, until the damage is structural.
Where Road Salt Attacks on a Vancouver Car
Salt does not simply sit on the road surface — it aerosolises under passing traffic and sprays upward into the wheel arches, undercarriage, and lower doors. The undercarriage of a vehicle that regularly uses Highway 1 through Surrey, the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, or any North Vancouver mountain road will show visible salt accumulation within days of the first treatment.
The most vulnerable areas are the inside faces of wheel arches — behind the tyre where spray is funnelled directly onto the metal — the undercarriage cross-members, drain holes in door sills that become blocked with debris, and the rear valance area where spray from the car ahead hits. On vehicles with pre-existing stone chips, salt water penetrates the damaged paint layer and begins corrosion immediately beneath the surface.
How Paint Protection Film Helps
Paint protection film does not only defend against stone chips. On lower body panels, rocker panels, and door sills, PPF acts as a barrier between the painted surface and the salt-laden moisture that sprays up from the road. The urethane film is impervious to salt solution, and its adhesive bond seals existing stone chips from further moisture ingress — preventing the most common path for under-paint corrosion to begin.
PPF is available in different coverage tiers: from basic coverage on the highest-impact front zones, to full front-end packages, to complete body coverage. For Vancouver's salt season specifically, we often recommend the Premium or Standard package to cover the front face and front wheel arches — the areas that receive the most direct salt spray on typical daily drives.
Other Steps Before the First Frost
Before the salt season begins in earnest, a thorough undercarriage rinse is one of the simplest and most effective steps. Many owners never think to spray the underside of their car — but a pressure washer with a narrow nozzle can clear salt residue from the undercarriage and wheel arches before it accumulates. This is most effective in October, before the first heavy salt application.
Check and clear the drain holes in the bottom of each door frame. These small passages allow water that enters the door panel to escape; when blocked by accumulated debris they trap moisture inside the door, accelerating corrosion from the inside out. A straightened paperclip or a can of compressed air clears them in under a minute.
Inspect existing stone chips on lower panels before winter. Any chip that has exposed bare metal is a salt ingress point. A touch-up pen fills the chip temporarily and prevents moisture from entering until a proper repair can be arranged. On vehicles with multiple chips in the same panel, a PPF overlay over that section is often more cost-effective than individual repairs.
What Not to Assume
A common assumption is that corrosion only matters for older vehicles or those with existing damage. Salt accelerated corrosion on a brand-new vehicle that has never been protected. The first winter after purchase is frequently when the first stone chips appear, and those chips are on unprotected paint. By the time rust becomes visible from the outside, it has typically been progressing beneath the surface for months.
We assess corrosion risk and PPF coverage needs for every vehicle before winter.
