Why Your Tyre Pressure Drops in Cold Weather
Published
That TPMS warning light that appeared this morning after the first cold night is not a false alarm.tyre pressure drops roughly one PSI for every ten degrees Celsius of temperature drop, and in Vancouver the shift from mild October mornings to sub-zero December nights can easily cost you four to six PSI in a short time. Here is what that means for your car and what to do about it.
Why Cold Weather Causes Tyre Pressure to Drop
The air inside a tyre is a gas, and gases compress when they cool. As the temperature drops overnight, the air molecules slow down and occupy less space, which reduces the pressure the tyre is exerting against the road. This is physics, not a defect in the tyre or the valve stem. Tyres also cool down faster after a drive than the ambient temperature suggests, so a reading taken immediately after parking will be lower than it was when you started the journey.
What a TPMS Warning Light Actually Means
Most modern vehicles have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. When the pressure in a tyre falls approximately 25 percent below the manufacturer's recommended level, the TPMS light illuminates. The light coming on after an autumn cold snap usually means the tyre has dropped to a genuinely low pressure, not a faulty sensor. Check it with a gauge before assuming it is an electronics problem.
Tyres that are 10 PSI below the recommended pressure feel noticeably different to drive: the steering is heavier, stopping distances increase, and underinflation causes uneven wear on the shoulder edges of the tyre. At motorway speeds this is a handling and safety issue, not just an efficiency concern.
How to Check and Inflate Tyres Correctly
Check tyre pressure when the tyres are cold — not after a long drive when the air inside has been heated by friction. Remove the valve cap, press a gauge firmly onto the valve stem, and read the pressure. Compare it to the sticker inside the driver's door jamb, which specifies the correct cold inflation pressure for that vehicle, not the number printed on the tyre sidewall, which is the maximum the tyre can handle, not the recommended operating pressure.
Add air in small increments using a petrol station inflator — most will have a pressure gauge built in. Inflate to the door jamb figure, not to a round number like 36 PSI. Check all four tyres; a slow puncture can be confused with temperature-related pressure loss if you only check one tyre.
Tyre Pressure and BC Winter Tyre Requirements
BC law requires winter or all-season tyres bearing the mountain雪花 symbol on marked routes from October 1 to March 31. If you have a TPMS light on and are driving a route that requires winter tyres, a stop at a filling station inflator before entering the highway is a legal and practical precaution. Underinflated tyres on snow and ice affect braking distances substantially more than on dry roads.
Winter tyres themselves also lose pressure in the cold. If you have a set of winter tyres on separate rims, check their pressure before mounting them, even if they were inflated correctly the previous spring.
When to Bring the Car to a Shop
If the TPMS light does not go out after inflating to the correct pressure, or if a tyre that has been inflated correctly still drops more than two PSI per week, there is a slow leak that needs investigation. Common causes include a damaged valve stem, a nail puncture, or a corroded wheel rim seal. These are all fixable but require the wheel to be removed and pressure-tested.
At JRS Auto Customs, we check tyre condition and inflation as part of any pre-winter inspection, along with the battery, brakes, and lights. If you have booked a winter service appointment, ask to have the tyres inspected while the car is in.
Our tyres service page covers what to check and when to replace rather than repair.
