What Drives Custom Wrap Pricing in Vancouver

What Drives Custom Wrap Pricing in Vancouver

Published

Two cars pull into the same shop for a colour change wrap. Both are mid-size sedans. One leaves two weeks later in Midnight Purple Matte and pays one price. The other leaves in a custom iridescent shift that changes from blue to pink depending on the angle, and the bill is substantially higher. The labour is the same. The difference comes down to a handful of factors that determine how complex a colour change wrap actually is.

Understanding what drives wrap cost helps Vancouver drivers get accurate quotes and avoid surprises — it also helps you decide where to spend and where to save.

The most straightforward driver of wrap cost is the surface area being covered. A two-door coupe has fewer panels than a full-size SUV, and a pickup truck has more surface area than almost any passenger car. But it is not only about size — panel count matters too. A vehicle with deeply sculpted body lines, complex curves, and multiple body-colour trim pieces requires more material and more time than one with flat, simple panels.

Vancouver's newer vehicle market skews toward crossovers and SUVs — the RAV4, CX-5, and Model Y are common wraps — and these mid-size vehicles represent a significant step up in panel count from a sedan.

Standard gloss colour films are the most affordable category. These are solid colours — black, white, red, blue — in a gloss finish. They apply cleanly, have predictable stretch properties, and most shops have extensive experience with them.

Matte and satin finishes cost more. The matte surface requires different handling during application to avoid glossing the finish, and the film itself is generally more expensive. Satin falls between gloss and matte in both cost and complexity.

Specialty colours — metallics with flake, colour-shifting formulas, chrome finishes, and iridescent wraps — sit at the top of the cost range. Colour-shifting films in particular require a temperature-controlled environment during application and demand significantly more time per panel. A specialty colour wrap on a full-size SUV can take considerably longer than a standard gloss colour on the same vehicle.

TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) films have become increasingly popular in Vancouver because they offer better resistance to stone chips, road salt, and the kind of abrasion that comes from regular use. They also self-heal minor scratches when exposed to heat. TPU films are more expensive than PVC (vinyl) alternatives, and the cost difference is reflected in the final quote.

For a vehicle that will see daily use on Vancouver roads, TPU is often the more practical choice even at a higher initial cost — the protection it offers extends the life of the wrap and reduces the need for spot repairs. For a weekend car or a show vehicle, PVC may represent the better value.

A full wrap covers every body panel from bumper to bumper. A partial wrap — sometimes called a clip wrap — covers only specific sections: the bonnet, the roof, the mirrors, or a two-tone split. Partial wraps are significantly less expensive because they use considerably less material and require far less installation time.

In Vancouver, many owners choose a partial wrap as a starting point — getting a feel for the colour on their vehicle before committing to a full wrap, or achieving a specific look at a lower price point. The same vehicle can also be quoted as a partial and then upgraded to a full wrap if the owner decides later.

A colour change wrap quote typically covers the film, the installation labour, and a basic prep wash. It may not include paint correction before the wrap is applied — and it should, because wrapping over scratches and swirl marks traps them under the film permanently.

Ask what prep is included. Ask whether the shop removes and refits trim pieces or wraps around them. Ask whether the quote is for material with a known brand name or an unspecified product. Each of these can account for meaningful differences between quotes from different shops for the same vehicle and colour.
