When Does Your Windscreen Need Restoration or Replacement

When Does Your Windscreen Need Restoration or Replacement

Published

Every Vancouver driver has had it happen: a stone kicks up on Highway 1, the windscreen takes a hit, and a few days later there is a crack spreading across the glass. Or a windscreen that was fine in October looks increasingly hazy by April after a winter of sand and grit flying up from the road surface. The question that follows is always the same: can this be restored, or does it need to be replaced?

What Glass Restoration Can Fix — and What It Cannot

Glass restoration removes surface-level damage from automotive glass using progressive compounding and polishing. It is effective for water-etching caused by prolonged exposure to road salt and mineral deposits, light scratches from wiper blade wear and improper cleaning, surface hazing from UV exposure over years, and minor pitting from fine road sand and grit.

Glass restoration cannot fix structural damage to the glass laminate. Cracks of any kind, star breaks, bullseye impacts, or chips that have cracked out from the point of impact cannot be polished away. Once the glass structure is compromised, replacement is the only correct solution. Driving with a cracked windscreen is a safety hazard and, in BC, can result in a roadside inspection flag from police.

When Windscreen Replacement Is the Only Option

A windscreen should be replaced when there is any crack that runs through the driver sight line regardless of length, when the chip or impact point is within the wiper sweep zone and has caused radiating cracks, when the damage is within five centimetres of the edge of the glass where structural integrity is greatest, or when there is any delamination — cloudiness or bubbling between the layers of the laminate.

ICBC comprehensive coverage covers windscreen replacement with no deductible for most drivers in BC. It is worth checking your policy before deciding to restore rather than replace.

What Vancouver Road Conditions Do to Windscreens

Vancouver winter road conditions are hard on windscreens. The sand and grit applied to icy roads through the North Shore, the Fraser Valley, and the Sea-to-Sky corridor is thrown up by traffic and sits on the glass surface. Mixed with wiper blade movement, this creates fine scratches across the windscreen that accumulate over a winter season.

Road debris is the other consistent threat. Highway driving between Vancouver and the ferry terminals exposes windscreens to stone strikes regularly. A stone chip that is not addressed promptly will crack out under temperature changes or the vibration of regular driving.

Protecting Your Windscreen Before Damage Occurs

The most effective way to protect a windscreen from road debris is a dedicated windscreen protection film. Unlike PPF applied to body panels, windscreen film is optically tuned to not affect visibility or create distortion, and it absorbs stone strikes before they can chip the glass.

Regular wiper blade replacement at least once a year — or twice in BC long wet season — prevents the most common source of fine scratches on windscreens. Worn wiper blades drag across the glass and create micro-scratches that accumulate into a haze over time.

Maintaining a safe following distance on highways reduces the probability of stone strikes. Gravel kicked up by vehicles ahead is a primary source of windscreen damage on BC highways.

Deciding Between Restoration and Replacement: A Practical Sequence

First, assess whether there are any cracks or structural damage. If yes, replacement is required. Second, if the damage is surface-level only, get a professional assessment from a glass restoration specialist. Third, check your insurance coverage — for most drivers with comprehensive coverage, ICBC covers windscreen replacement with no deductible.

If the damage is purely surface-level and you are comfortable with the cost, professional glass restoration is significantly less expensive than replacement and restores optical clarity without insurance involvement.
